Founder of Bring Your Own Laptop & Chief Instructor

instructor

I discovered the world of design as an art student when I stumbled upon a lab full of green & blue iMac G3’s. My initial curiosity around using the computer to create ‘art’ developed into a full-blown passion, eventually leading me to become a digital designer and founder of Bring Your Own Laptop.

Sharing and teaching are a huge part of who I am. As a certified Adobe instructor, I've had the honor of winning multiple Adobe teaching awards at their annual MAX conference. I see Bring Your Own Laptop as the supportive community I wished for when I was first starting out and intimidated by design. Through teaching, I hope to bring others along for the ride and empower my students to bring their stories, labors of love, and art into the world.
True to my Kiwi roots, I've lived in many places, and currently, I reside in Ireland with my wife and kids.

Everyone. Hey, in this video we're gonna look at a  feature called Retype. What it's gonna do is this is like a press metal old  worldy sign, okay? And I have no idea what the font is,  but somehow illustrator's gonna go  and figure it out and make it editable. Ready? Bam.

It's not perfect, okay? It's not the press metal version  'cause that's a photograph of uh, font. But look at this. I can go through  and say, alright, it's now old Bushmills Daniel. That doesn't make sense. But you get the idea.

It's a way of taking things that are pixelated photographs  and converting it into editable text. Really good when you have outline text  or if somebody hands you A PDF or a JPEG of something  and say, Hey, can you change the type on this? And you're like, I have no idea what the font is. This will guess and turn into edible text. It's very cool. Alright, let's jump in.

Alright, to get started,  just open up a plain old document. Uh, it doesn't matter what size it  is in your exercise files. We need these two files called retype, O one and oh two. One's a jpeg, one's at PNG and I just drag mine in. Or you can use file place. We'll start with the old Bushmills whiskey.

It's a sign, um, at my local pub. Um, it's actually a brand  that exists in Ireland for whiskey. It's good. But I like this old sign  and it works for this project. So this word whiskey down here, I want to kind  of find out what the font is. Okay?

So what we can do is we can go to type  and if you go to retype, it'll be grayed out. So you have to have it selected first. Okay? Then go to type and down to retype. I've got the beta version of mine. It'll be out and better when you get to it.

It is a little clunky at the moment. Hmm, it's good. But like preparing for this video took me a little while  to kind of like master it and it'll get smoother. So we're gonna go to retype. We're gonna start, there's two options. Match font and edit text.

So we're gonna match the font  and it'll whatever you have selected,  it'll pick whatever the largest font it can  find and try and guess it. Like it's not perfect. I already had a look at this. I'm like, oh, it's so close. It is so close. It is almost bang on.

Okay, for this top one here,  and I'd say for what I need,  see the curve on this s at the end here, it's different. So it's close. It's looking both on your machine  and it is looking for, um, stuff through uh, Adobe fonts. So it's pretty good. Um, you can decide like, not that one,  but this one and it will check this one. Okay?

So I'm gonna use whiskey down here only  because that is N type whap, okay? Or it's in a whap envelope. Uh, I just want plain old text. Cool. So it's find the font. What you need to do is you need  to click on this little option saying activate it.

I'll activate a different one, okay? And it'll take a little second  and eventually it'll come up with a tick mark. Why you're doing that? Just so  that it loads on your machine,  you can start using it and that's it. You might just use this feature just for that thing  and you know that it's Shackleton. Now you're gonna use, see that one's activated.

Where it gets quite cool is at the moment,  I bit you the changes 'cause this is a weird ux. And if I click exit, then I can go to edit type. Okay? And I'm gonna click on this one  and I am going to click this font and I'm gonna click apply. And it's gonna say some stuff like click  okay, get a bit lost. Click edit text again.

Okay, let's click on this one here. Wanted to embed the, um, image. Okay, that's okay. I'm gonna say you. And then Dan's gonna notice  that it says double click  to apply the selective font to make this text live. Look what it did.

It's a slightly different font. It's, we'll be okay with that one. 'cause this is like, this is way back. This is, you know, very old font. You'll notice that it's actually editable  now and now I have to exit it. But look that, and you're like, oh, it's editable.

Text this. There's some kind of like stuff  hiding behind this one. Like, ignore that for the moment. But look, we can make this on capitals. Uh, bourbon. Look at that.

It's the same-ish font. Okay. And it's just really cool that you can, yeah, select things  and just go off and see if you can match the font. It's pretty good. It's pretty cool. It's made this kind of like embedded version.

It's kind of done some photo shoppy stuff,  um, to kind of blend it in. So all worldy cool signs, fun. What's probably more realistic  for us when we're working is we've got this thing  here and it's a p and g. It's a screenshot. It is not editable text. I dunno what the font is.

We do 'cause we made it. I know. But you end up with stuff like this. Somebody sends us a jpeg and say,  can you print this at a high res? And you're like, well change the text. You're like, ah, I kind of can.

Hey, so what we can do now is with it selected again,  let's go up to, uh, type. Let's go to retype. Let's match the font first, okay? And it's pick the perfect font, okay? And go through this. Just knows I know what it is 'cause I made it okay,  but it's hang on accurate, which is cool.

I've synced the font, which is perfect. I'm gonna click exit. And what I'm gonna do is see, I'm gonna edit the text. What text. I bet you this flow will  change 'cause I get a bit lost in here. Um, I'm gonna do this one up here.

And it says, double click to apply selected font  to make text live. Ooh, smooth double click. It's gonna embed the image that I brought in. 'cause it says it can't be linked. I  need to be able to mess with it. Okie dokie.

And it feels like nothing's happened. Let's click on edit text again. It's in beta and mine. Yours will work nicely. Double click it  again and it kind of changed. Do you see that there?

Let's do the same for this. Double click that one. Convert it to live text. Retype to edit, converted to live type exit. Retype to edit. Okie dokie.

Go away. Oh, we're still in retype. All right, you wait there. Alright. I hit escape. That's what escaped me.

It's in beta. Okay. But what's cool about it now is this is now, oh,  in caps, it is editable. And look, it kind of smooshed the background that is still,  um, like pixels. Let's have a look. Can you see?

It's just a shortcut. You can see it's just, uh, bitmap. Okay. But now I have these two as editable text. Okay? So it will try and get either perfect like in this  case, 'cause it knew the font.

And that's the one I end up using it. I'm like, I found this PDF of type and it's all outlined. Okay? And it'll figure out what it is. And like this first one here, if you,  if it doesn't find something, it'll find something close. If you're looking for the vibe of a font, okay,  it'll go through and get you something close.

And to finish off, I want this one here to go to. Object envelope, distort. Let's make with Wap and this around with, which one is it? It's kind of like this one. Not quite getting there. I need to kind of stretch it out.

And I think I'm trying to match Bushmills. It's actually  The word bourbon. Anyway,  you get the idea. So retype is cool, it's useful  and will get better at some better on my version. It won't be in yours. Yours will be working a little bit  more smoothly and probably a little differently,  but at least you know the kind of basic mechanics.

Yours will be slightly different, right? That's retype in Adobe Illustrator.
