I discovered the world of design as an art student when I stumbled upon a lab full of green & blue iMac G3’s. My initial curiosity around using the computer to create ‘art’ developed into a full-blown passion, eventually leading me to become a digital designer and founder of Bring Your Own Laptop.

Sharing and teaching are a huge part of who I am. As a certified Adobe instructor, I've had the honor of winning multiple Adobe teaching awards at their annual MAX conference. I see Bring Your Own Laptop as the supportive community I wished for when I was first starting out and intimidated by design. Through teaching, I hope to bring others along for the ride and empower my students to bring their stories, labors of love, and art into the world.
True to my Kiwi roots, I've lived in many places, and currently, I reside in Ireland with my wife and kids.

Uh, best of All, he is also an amazing instructor  and he's agreed to join us here at Bring Your Own Laptop,  to teach you and me the principles of animation. And before Lucas gets started,  I just wanna remind you if there are some really cool, uh,  assignments in this course,  and I would love for you when you do them to share them  with us on either our bring your Laptop Facebook group  or LinkedIn group, or Tag Me  or Lucas here in our social medias. When you upload them, uh, links to all of those will be  below this video here.

Uh, yeah. So take it away. Lucas. It's good to see you buddy, but  really you need to get started. Close the split screen. Get working.

Uh, can you close it? Oh, okay. Then I'm not above closing a split screen. Ready? Go on. He's really nice.

You are really gonna like him. I like him. You are gonna like him. It's a great course. Let's get started. You ready?

3, 2, 1. Let's learn to animate. Welcome to this class, principles of Animation, the Art  of Appealing Motion for Beginners. My name is Lucas Ridley, and I'll be your instructor. I've been a professional animator  for the last 10 years working on movies like Disney's,  Aladdin, Avengers, infinity War, ready Player One,  and video games like The Last of Us part two. The animation principles should never be learned in the  vacuum of a single software.

When you're learning animation, it's important  to understand the universal nature of these principles,  that they can be applied to any animation medium. And so that's how we're gonna learn them in this course. We're gonna be taking a variety of animation mediums  to help learn and demonstrate these principles. This course is set up so that  after each lesson, there's an assignment  and demonstration so  that you can see these principles put into action  right after you learn them. This course is for anyone who's new to animation  and for also those self-taught animators out there  who might have a few knowledge gaps. They need help connecting a few dots on.

You don't need any fancy software  or you don't need to be great at  drawing to take this course. This course was created for everyone to begin their journey  as an animator so you can follow along  with things you can find around your house. As long as you have a cell phone,  something you can take pictures with,  you can start animating  and I will show you how in this course. Thanks for watching and I look forward  to seeing you in class.
