As a designer with over 17 years of experience, I've learned that efficiency and quality go hand in hand when it comes to design. Canva is often underestimated in the professional world, but when you know the right hacks, it can become an incredibly powerful tool. In this post, I'm sharing my top eight design tips for Canva users, from image mastery to font pairing. Let’s dive in!
A key element of design is knowing how to make your images stand out, and Canva has some surprisingly powerful tools for that.
Take this example: Here’s a before-and-after photo that shows the transformation. The trick is using the Adjust feature to manipulate clarity and sharpness.
Upload your image.
Hit Edit and zoom in.
Click Adjust and focus on clarity and sharpness.
Crank up Clarity for a more vibrant look.
With just a few tweaks, you'll take an average image and turn it into a professional-grade photo. Don't be afraid to experiment with these settings for different effects!
Give new depth and detailed intensity to your images with just a few clicks.
One of the easiest ways to impress clients is by placing your designs in real-world mockups. Canva offers many ready-to-use options that make this process simple.
Here's how you can do it:
Go to Elements and find Mockups.
Choose one that fits your design (such as a bottle mockup).
Export your logo as a PNG and drag it into your chosen mockup.
Voila! Your design will immediately feel more polished and tangible. Mockups are perfect for presenting your work in a way that feels more professional and considered.
There is nothing as fun and rewarding as seeing your designs blended with the real world!
Working with color can be tricky, especially when trying to match existing branding or design guidelines. Here’s a quick hack for selecting harmonious colors.
For actual color picking:
Convert your Pantone color to a Hex code using a quick online search.
Paste the Hex code into Canva’s Color Wheel (found on Canva's website).
You’ll get complimentary or analogous colors that work perfectly together.
If you need to defend your color choices, Canva even provides meanings for colors. For example, orange represents youthfulness and creativity—perfect for any brand with that vibe.

If you’re using Canva for presentations, one of the biggest time-savers is the Layouts feature. It auto-arranges your content in visually appealing ways.
Here’s how it works:
Throw your images and text onto a blank canvas.
Go to Design, then select Layouts.
Watch Canva automatically align your elements, adjusting text size and image positioning.
This feature is a game-changer when you're under a tight deadline. It’s not flashy, but it can save hours of work!

Spending hours searching for the perfect font pair? Stop. Canva makes font pairing easy.
Instead of scrolling endlessly through fonts, search for font pairings online, like “Canva font pairing,” and borrow from other designers’ combos. Then, follow these steps:
Choose a bold, impactful font for your header.
Pick a more subtle, lighter font for body text.
Adjust spacing and size to create a harmonious feel.
Pairing fonts doesn’t have to be time-consuming when you use pre-curated combinations!
Font pairing can be a challenge for beginners and professionals, but Canva helps you find the best solution.
Templates are an often overlooked feature that can help you create beautiful designs faster. Whether you're making a flyer, social media graphic, or business card, Canva’s templates give you a great starting point, saving you time without compromising quality.
Don’t forget, you can always customize templates to fit your personal style, so you’re not locked into a rigid design. Just make sure the final product feels authentic to your client or brand.
Canva is a template-based app for speeding up creative work in an intuitive way.
If you’re working on multiple projects, organization is key. Canva offers a great feature where you can create folders for all your design files. Whether it's branding kits, client projects, or personal design work, folders allow you to quickly access your designs and avoid the chaos of a cluttered workspace.
There’s no amazing science behind this. It’s all about being efficient by keeping your work tidy and organized
If you’re spending time clicking through menus in Canva, you're not working as efficiently as you could be. Familiarizing yourself with keyboard shortcuts will drastically speed up your workflow.
Here are a few essentials:
Command + C (Mac) or Ctrl + C (Windows) to copy.
Command + V (Mac) or Ctrl + V (Windows) to paste.
Command + D (Mac) or Ctrl + D (Windows) to duplicate.
Master these, and you'll be flying through your designs in no time.
A professional designer’s team of sidekicks: shortcuts! Include these in your daily work and understand why I love them!
As a professional designer, I’ve seen first-hand how Canva can elevate your design process. By incorporating these workflow hacks into your routine, you can create high-quality designs quickly and efficiently, all while impressing clients and keeping your projects on track.
