Adobe Illustrator is a powerful tool used by designers to create vector-based artwork, from professional logos to detailed illustrations and compelling infographics.

In BYOL’s Illustrator Essentials course, Adobe Certified Professional and Adobe MAX Master Award winner Dan Scott will teach you techniques such as tips for conquering the pen, pencil, and curvature tools, the world of brushes, lines, and strokes, and how to harness the power of Adobe's Generative AI features to push your creative boundaries. Through the course, you will create real-world, portfolio-ready projects.

When you are ready to take your Illustrator skills to the next level, BYOL’s Illustrator Advanced course will help you speed up your workflow and expand your knowledge with step-by-step instruction on quick color adjustments, the best method for vectorizing and coloring hand-drawn sketches, and tips for creating charts and graphs.

As a member of the BYOL community, you’ll learn the tools to create anything your creative heart desires—from icons, logos, and postcards to beautifully hand-drawn illustrations!

Frequently asked questions

We've answered some common questions below but we're always here to help!

Brushes allow you to change the appearance of paths in Illustrator. Calligraphic brushes have strokes that are designed to resemble the point of a calligraphic pen while bristle brushes mimic the appearance of a natural brush. Scatter brushes dispatch whatever object you select and pattern brushes are composed of tiles that repeat.
Illustrator is one of the most popular design tools on the planet and for good reason! Designers use Illustrator to create vectors, scalable images that won’t lose their resolution no matter how large or small you make them. Web designers, artists, and illustrators use Illustrator for creating logos and icons, designing custom fonts and typography, freehand drawing, and graphics that need to be scaled to a range of platforms and applications.
Illustrator and Photoshop are both part of Adobe’s Creative Cloud and are designed to be used together. Illustrator is used to create vector images such as logos, graphs, and icons, and to customize typography. Photoshop is for editing photos and creating new images by layering different image and photo files together. Photoshop files often use assets made in Illustrator and vise versa. A graphic made in Illustrator can be part of a photo editing project in Photoshop.

We recommend taking the Essentials courses before moving onto Advanced (E.g. taking Illustrator Essentials before taking Illustrator Advanced) especially if you’re new to the app or software. If you’re self taught or have used the software for a long time we still recommend watching the Essentials course as many of our students are surprised at how many new things they learn here!
