Overview
Daniel Scott
Founder of Bring Your Own Laptop & Chief Instructor
instructorI discovered the world of design as an art student when I stumbled upon a lab full of green & blue iMac G3’s. My initial curiosity around using the computer to create ‘art’ developed into a full-blown passion, eventually leading me to become a digital designer and founder of Bring Your Own Laptop.
Sharing and teaching are a huge part of who I am. As a certified Adobe instructor, I've had the honor of winning multiple Adobe teaching awards at their annual MAX conference. I see Bring Your Own Laptop as the supportive community I wished for when I was first starting out and intimidated by design. Through teaching, I hope to bring others along for the ride and empower my students to bring their stories, labors of love, and art into the world.
True to my Kiwi roots, I've lived in many places, and currently, I reside in Ireland with my wife and kids.
We’re awarding certificates for this course!

Hi everyone, in this video I want to show you...
ways of checking what other people's fonts are...
let's say this site here, potential competitor...
you want to know what font they're using...
I like this one, because it's, it's clear and it's slightly condensed...
so that you can fit a lot in these categories.
So let's say you want to know what it is, what you can do--
I'm using Chrome, potentially the most common of browsers...
you might not be using it...
so you'll have to figure it out for your own one, or install Chrome.
Let's say this one here, you just right click it...
and you can go to this one called 'Inspect'...
so on a Mac you might have to 'Option' click it...
and this thing appears, and you might have to drag it around...
and move it around a bit.
What you're looking for is, on the side here...
is this thing called 'Computed'...
Computed would tell you, eventually - you might scroll down a bit.
- what the font family is, and you can see...
in this case it's Roboto Condensed, and you're like, "Awesome."
So I know what font it is, then you can go to...
something like Adobe Fonts or Google Fonts...
or search the internet, and just go, I want to find a Roboto...
super common body copy font...
and you can see there's a couple, there's a Roboto Slab...
this looks more like it, and in here there is a ton of...
different weights and widths.
So that looks like, there is Roboto Condensed, and that looks like it.
So you can then activate it, I've already...
I'm using Roboto for another project, but there you go...
it's a Google font, you'll find it in there as well...
and yeah, so that's how you potentially can do it from websites.
Let's say that you just have a screen grab or a PDF, or something...
what you can do is, you can--
you'll need a JPEG or a PNG version of it...
so these are from our Mood Boards, and I really like that font there...
wonder what it is.
What you can do is, weirdly at Adobe, doesn't matter where you are...
it seems you can just drag something in...
there's an official way, and it's called, not sure...
wait for it to load...
Visual Search...
I imagine it's under Fonts, and it is in there somewhere, you'll find it.
I just dumped it in there, it says, "Is this the font you want?"
You can kind of move this around to the things you want...
I'm like, "Nope," that was good, I kind of wrecked it...
next step, it's going to try and guess the text...
I've moved it off, it finds it tough...
with these really thin parts of these Serifs...
so I'm going to type in "Tea store", there you go.
It gets it normally, and then it's going to give me some fonts...
look at that, and it's pretty close, it's not exact...
can you see, there's like little air here, the little pokey add-ey bit...
that's different, can I see any of them that have that one?
It depends as well, you might be like...
actually yeah, I like that ear there better, that has the little flat end...
or you like the one that has this little bit...
and it just gets you close, and then you can activate them...
and start working on them.
It's not always going to get them, it can do...
there's other services.
What the font, is a cool one...
that I used to use, but I've started using Adobe Fonts...
because it's nice to find something close enough and activate it...
and start working in my design concepts.
All right, that is kind of exploring fonts...
that are already out there online or in pictures...
and kind of grabbing them and using them in your design...
oh, little side note, Adobe has an app called Adobe Capture...
it's on Android and iPhone...
and you can actually do that on the fly...
while you're kind of moving around, it's kind of cool.
So if you're out and you're like, "Oh, that's cool"...
you can actually try and capture the font live on your phone...
and it will download and install it for you...
all right, that is it, let's get on to the next video.
