Founder of Bring Your Own Laptop & Chief Instructor
instructorI discovered the world of design as an art student when I stumbled upon a lab full of green & blue iMac G3’s. My initial curiosity around using the computer to create ‘art’ developed into a full-blown passion, eventually leading me to become a digital designer and founder of Bring Your Own Laptop.
Sharing and teaching are a huge part of who I am. As a certified Adobe instructor, I've had the honor of winning multiple Adobe teaching awards at their annual MAX conference. I see Bring Your Own Laptop as the supportive community I wished for when I was first starting out and intimidated by design. Through teaching, I hope to bring others along for the ride and empower my students to bring their stories, labors of love, and art into the world.
True to my Kiwi roots, I've lived in many places, and currently, I reside in Ireland with my wife and kids.
First thing we need to do is to get the exercise files, so there'll be a link in the description or on the sites here somewhere, we can go out and get the exercise files, and they are just like the images that we're going to use, any text we use, any kind of resources that I talk about, so download those.
The other thing that's going to be there is, there'll be a link on every specific video to something called the completed file, and it just means, when I'm doing something in a course, when I get to the end, I'll hit 'Save', and I'll put it in a special folder, and name it the same as the video so that if you're doing it, and yours look not like the same, you can download my version, check it out, open up Illustrator, and go, "Oh, that's how he's done that." So just compare the two, they're called completed files, and they're only on videos that we're actually doing.
And the last thing is the cheat sheet. The cheat sheet is something that I make. There'll be a link on the screen, about here. You can go there, they're downloadable PDF, print it out, there's a video version too, share it around, and it's just that stuff. Once you're finished with this course, you'll be like, "I'm good now, I want to go faster, I want all the shortcuts." That's what those little cheat sheets are for. Go download all of that, and then we'll go onto the next video.
