Overview

The idea of UX, or User Experience, is not new but continues to be a sore point for designers and end users. For those who can figure it out, it pays well more than graphic design alone. And, UX design uses skills you already have. Interested? Don’t have a clue what UX Design is or where to start? We’ve got the UX design training experience that’s going to open a whole new world, and better-paying work!

UX design is creating products, most commonly apps and websites, that are easy to use, please the end user and look great. It’s understanding what the target user needs and how they get what they want. It’s how they interact with the information and how they navigate your design. The reason there’s so much demand for UX designers is that not a lot of graphic designers truly understand what’s involved. It’s more than slick graphics!

At BYOL, we’ve got years of design experience and an equally impressive number of years teaching design to real world standards. We know what UX and UI design for professional grade work require, and we know how to give you the best training and information to build you a lifelong foundation.

I discovered the world of design as an art student when I stumbled upon a lab full of green & blue iMac G3’s. My initial curiosity around using the computer to create ‘art’ developed into a full-blown passion, eventually leading me to become a digital designer and founder of Bring Your Own Laptop.

Sharing and teaching are a huge part of who I am. As a certified Adobe instructor, I've had the honor of winning multiple Adobe teaching awards at their annual MAX conference. I see Bring Your Own Laptop as the supportive community I wished for when I was first starting out and intimidated by design. Through teaching, I hope to bring others along for the ride and empower my students to bring their stories, labors of love, and art into the world.
True to my Kiwi roots, I've lived in many places, and currently, I reside in Ireland with my wife and kids.

Hey, in this video we're gonna look at the, uh,  UX researcher process. So we're in our second step of our design process now. So this is as it relates to a UX designer as well. Um, so, um, what you're gonna have  to do here is one of two things. If you've got an existing kind of, uh, data  that you can work with, great. You can kinda make some, you can do some research,  and you can make some great assumptions from that research.

Now, um, say it's, say you've got an existing website  and it's a new feature or an existing app,  and it's an extra little feature. So you're gonna already have data analytics about the people  and their movements  and their, um, how they're using the site. So you can kind of make some judgements from that  and do that research from that existing data. If you've got a new idea  and it's a new site, so there's a new site,  but an existing field, great, you can do,  you can borrow some, um, some data,  maybe census stuff, okay. Um, from your industry and, uh, okay,  but say that it's a new app  and it had, you know, it's brand new  and it's never been developed before,  or a website that's never been seen  before, um, then there's not gonna be a whole lot  of research you can do, okay? Um, you are gonna find most value out of the actual, um,  mocking up and, um, testing loop, okay?

So don't spend too much time in the research phase. Um, it will depend on what you have available, okay? At this stage. So the two main things are gonna be looking  at, uh, competitive research, okay? Competitor research. Okay?

Just see who else is out there,  and we'll do that in the next video,  and then we'll move on to probably the most important part  of the research process, and that is building your persona  or your user profile. All right? I'll see you in the next video.
