Overview

The idea of UX, or User Experience, is not new but continues to be a sore point for designers and end users. For those who can figure it out, it pays well more than graphic design alone. And, UX design uses skills you already have. Interested? Don’t have a clue what UX Design is or where to start? We’ve got the UX design training experience that’s going to open a whole new world, and better-paying work!

UX design is creating products, most commonly apps and websites, that are easy to use, please the end user and look great. It’s understanding what the target user needs and how they get what they want. It’s how they interact with the information and how they navigate your design. The reason there’s so much demand for UX designers is that not a lot of graphic designers truly understand what’s involved. It’s more than slick graphics!

At BYOL, we’ve got years of design experience and an equally impressive number of years teaching design to real world standards. We know what UX and UI design for professional grade work require, and we know how to give you the best training and information to build you a lifelong foundation.

Founder of Bring Your Own Laptop & Chief Instructor

instructor

I discovered the world of design as an art student when I stumbled upon a lab full of green & blue iMac G3’s. My initial curiosity around using the computer to create ‘art’ developed into a full-blown passion, eventually leading me to become a digital designer and founder of Bring Your Own Laptop.

Sharing and teaching are a huge part of who I am. As a certified Adobe instructor, I've had the honor of winning multiple Adobe teaching awards at their annual MAX conference. I see Bring Your Own Laptop as the supportive community I wished for when I was first starting out and intimidated by design. Through teaching, I hope to bring others along for the ride and empower my students to bring their stories, labors of love, and art into the world.
True to my Kiwi roots, I've lived in many places, and currently, I reside in Ireland with my wife and kids.

All right, we're at the end, boo. Okay. Hope you enjoyed the course,  but what you gotta do now is  how do you, how do you stay current? What do you gotta do and what's the next steps might be  that you need to go off and learn some skills. Okay. Might be you need to go  and do, say my Photoshop for web UI course,  or my experience designer or Muse.

There's a bunch of ones that I've got,  but regardless of who you do it or where you do it, go off  and maybe get your skill level up. That might be something you can do. Um, um, but now you need to stay current. And how do you do that? Um,  easiest way is there's podcasts out there. I listen to them while I'm running.

There's not one that I really like enough to give you, uh,  you know, put my weight behind. But download a few of them. Some of them are good, some of 'em are bad. They're free. Okay. You can listen when you're traveling.

Um, other good things to sign up  for is obviously LinkedIn groups,  Facebook groups follow good people on Twitter. If you wanna follow me, I'm Dan loves Adobe on Twitter. Um, so those are good social media things. Just to kind of get snippets of when you're going. Um, what you can do though, one of the nice things  to do is meetup.com. meetup.com is, there's lots of things on there  and look for specifically UX groups  and they're popping up all over the place  'cause it's quite popular now.

And like, say the one here in Dublin, um,  is, it's really strong. There's like a hundred people that turn up once a month. They have presenters. It's sometimes people that are on tour for book tours  and it's, it's really well done. And it's, and it's generally really, you know,  good presenters and it means you get to mingle  with other people at your sort of level. There'd be loads of people there kind of turning up, going,  I don't really know what UX is, it's why I'm here.

Okay. So you can, you can help them. They can help you. You find more experienced people. Meetups can be a really good way to get involved. Um, regardless.

Oh, one other thing is, um, newsletters. Okay. I like UX for the masses.com. It's the one I read the best the most. Okay. They've got some really good stuff that comes out now.

Yeah, that's gonna be us. You get to kind of, where's my, where's my post-it note. There he is. Okay. You get to now wear your post-it notes, stick 'em all  around your desk, show people you know  what mean business when it comes to ux. And that's gonna be the end of our course.

Haida are good people, and I'll see you in my next videos.
