Founder of Bring Your Own Laptop & Chief Instructor

instructor

I discovered the world of design as an art student when I stumbled upon a lab full of green & blue iMac G3’s. My initial curiosity around using the computer to create ‘art’ developed into a full-blown passion, eventually leading me to become a digital designer and founder of Bring Your Own Laptop.

Sharing and teaching are a huge part of who I am. As a certified Adobe instructor, I've had the honor of winning multiple Adobe teaching awards at their annual MAX conference. I see Bring Your Own Laptop as the supportive community I wished for when I was first starting out and intimidated by design. Through teaching, I hope to bring others along for the ride and empower my students to bring their stories, labors of love, and art into the world.
True to my Kiwi roots, I've lived in many places, and currently, I reside in Ireland with my wife and kids.

Hello, it's class project time... I want you to create a, a little brand... we're not going to spend-- it's not a branding class... but let's have something unique for all of us, that when we're moving along... we're building something that we can use in our portfolio... and then when we share it we're not all doing Limerick techno...

how do we get a bit of variety? We use, in your class projects there'll be a link to this... randomprojectgenerator.com... I made this with the team at Bring Your Own Laptop so that... you can get a, like a generated brief... so go to it, go to the 'Figma Advanced'...

and in here type in your village, your town, your city, it doesn't matter... and then you should be presented with Limerick, and then a music genre... and just use the one that it gives you, it'll help push your... ability to work on projects that maybe... you know, Jazz isn't my favorite, I don't mind Jazz... but having some restrictions here, I guess...

will help me define what the app looks like... instead of just doing the same old things in my portfolio. So use this as your name, and this is the logo... we'll use a logo mark, you don't have to spend too much time on it, or you can... so you can-- I just use an icon for my bird... a free icon, I'll show you in the next video...

an interesting widget to get free icons... you get bonus points if you spend some time making your logo... but actually, designing it yourself, that would be super awesome... if you can give yourself some time to design... in this case, a fish logo for Limerick Jazz. So we've got our brief, we've got our name...

and I want you to make a logo... either a free stock icon, or design your own... and then I want you to pick some colors... there are kind of like three basic colors you're going to need... primary, secondary, and a neutral color... you might have an extra, third kind of accent color here...

sorry, fourth, it's up to you... I ended up with this, my primary... my secondary is going to be my neutral color... I've got this one, it's not my accent color, this is my interface color... you don't have to have this one, I just like having it... like the background here is the interface color we saw earlier...

it's so that I can put white stuff over the top and it stands off a bit more... but that's optional for you. So there are plenty of places to go find color swatches... a few colors that work together... I've put a link to Adobe Color, which I use a lot... if you want to get more in depth on color...

I've left two links here for the kind of older material system, design system... and the newer M3 version... there might be an M4 out now, go check those out... if you do want to dive into a bit more, it's a lot more detail... that I'm going to do in this video, but the minimum is, just pick three colors. How did I get my three colors?

I just went to, I made a Mood Board, 'Shift 1'... and had loads of stuff, and I was like, I was looking around... and I just started picking it with the Eyedropper tool, I went like this... 'R' for the Rectangle tool... hold 'Shift', so it's a square, then I hit the 'I' key on my keyboard... and went, oh, I like that...

no, I can't remember where I got them from... and I doubt I got them-- I don't think I got them all from the same place... and then I think I changed them but a Mood Board is a good way to--  maybe I got it from this, sometimes just pull them straight out of an image... because there's just a really cool image with some cool colors... and you're like, "Oh," there you go, that's how I got my ones. So you need your logo, you need your colors...

and deliverables, is three screenshots of your brief... you can either screenshot it, or there's a Download as PNG... and then I want to see your color choices in the logo on your Nav... so if you arrange them nicely here... you could take a screenshot of all of this, and that would be perfect... if your name gets long...

say you end up with, like classical music, and it's really long... you can use an acronym... so it was Limerick Classical Music, I'm happy for that as well. Choose a font, up to you, we'll talk about fonts later on... or at least we'll get into typography, a lot more advanced, later in the course... we'll get into color, more advanced as well...

but for the moment pick some colors, make a little logo... or just use a free stock icon like I did... upload it, and I'll see you in the next video.
