Founder of Bring Your Own Laptop & Chief Instructor

instructor

I discovered the world of design as an art student when I stumbled upon a lab full of green & blue iMac G3’s. My initial curiosity around using the computer to create ‘art’ developed into a full-blown passion, eventually leading me to become a digital designer and founder of Bring Your Own Laptop.

Sharing and teaching are a huge part of who I am. As a certified Adobe instructor, I've had the honor of winning multiple Adobe teaching awards at their annual MAX conference. I see Bring Your Own Laptop as the supportive community I wished for when I was first starting out and intimidated by design. Through teaching, I hope to bring others along for the ride and empower my students to bring their stories, labors of love, and art into the world.
True to my Kiwi roots, I've lived in many places, and currently, I reside in Ireland with my wife and kids.

In the last video I showed you how to bulk select stuff, and then go... all go to the Home page, and that is cool, there's a better way... because that only works when... you can actually select everything, and there's not a hundred of them... what we're going to do is we're actually going to do it from the Main component... and although go into it a bit more detail in this video...

the basic one is, if you do it to the Main component  all the instances, look at that, they all get that same link... we'll do it to this bottom Nav as well... where we update one of them and they all update... it looks messy, but it took just like two seconds to do, noodles everywhere... somebody dropped a plate of them onto our designs... anyway, let me show you in a little bit more detail.

To start, I'm going to go 'Shift 1' to see everything... and I'm going to go 'Shift E' to move to Prototype mode... and I'm going to right click anywhere, and go, 'Remove All Interactions'... you might have to be a bit more specific... if you've rigged something up, you don't want to touch... but I'm removing all mine.

So the trick is, is at the moment, for me at least... can you see over here, this is actually a frame, it should be a component... and that's the magic trick, right? We're going to work with a centralized Main component... and if we link those they all update. So I'm going to go to this one here, this is going to be my Main component...

it's called Frame 3, going to make it a component... I'm going to go in here and I'm going to say, this is "Nav Upper"... and I'm going to copy it, and I need to replace all of these guys... because these are just lazy old frames, they're not connected to it. So what I'm going to do is, select them all, and... try to remember my shortcut, 'Command Shift R', there you go, that worked...

that worked? Yep... the way I check is, I go and check-- so undo... you can see, they're all called Frame 3... try and remember the shortcut, and they've all changed to Nav Upper, happy days... do I have another one?

Whoops, great shortcut, 'Command Shift R'... or 'Ctrl Shift R' on a PC, sorry, PC guys and girls. So now what we do, instead of dragging them all over... like that cool trick I showed you in the last one... what we do is, when the Navigation is clicked... we're going to go to this Home page, and the cool thing about it is...

can you see, this one did it, this one did it, and this one did it ... and ours is a really simple navigation... let's do it to the ones down the bottom here... for me, mine's already instances of this Main component... where's the Main component? I know where it is...

but if you don't know, right click... 'Go to Main Component', there I am, hello... and what we can do is, we can go inside of this one... instead of doing that whole Select All, like we did in the last video... that's, like that's a cool shortcut, and useful... but when we're dealing with navigation...

we can be a bit more intentional with components. So I want search to go to... 'Shift 1', too far out, can't see anything... I want it to go to... where I want to go to? I want it to go to, you, go to there...

I want my Account page to go to my Account page... I want my Wish list page, I haven't decided what I'm calling that yet... to go to there, obviously, can play around with all the different transitions... but for the moment you get the idea. Look, he's doing it, but let's look at this one... they're all doing it, they're all going the right place...

remember the Essentials course where we're dragging things around... and you're like, "There's got to be a better way," welcome to the better away... just do it to the Main component, and they all update. So that's the bulk way of updating all your noodles... I'm not sure if I'm going to get used to that word noodles... but anyway, that's how to do it, let's get on to the next video.
