Hi everyone, this video we're going to cover...| all the quick shortcuts, tips and tricks... for dealing with fonts, type, weight, line spacing, letter spacing... making things bold, and strike through... there's some good quality shortcuts... that work across not only Figma but other word processors... and kind of the things that I use on a daily basis...
and I think I'll just wrap them up in this one video here... hopefully, there's one or two you haven't used before, all right, let's dive in. First up, there are lots of shortcuts... I'm going to put them all in the shortcut sheet...| that you can get from the Exercise Files.. to get started I just got a text box on an empty page... let's select all the text, and my first and favorite one...
is if you hold down 'Command Option' on a Mac, 'Ctrl Alt' on a PC... see those two keys, hold them down... and then you're looking for the greater than, '>', and less than, '<' keys... the editor will flash them on the screen here... they're the ones down, normally next to the M key on an English keyboard... often tied in with the comma and the period...
and if you go left and right, look at that, what is it doing? Can you see over here, it's shifting through the different weights, I love it... because otherwise there's this fun game of...| clickety click, click the, not quite click... awesome, so that's 'Command Option' on a Mac, 'Ctrl Alt' on a PC... and use that '>' and '<' key... those same, greater than and less than key, with all the text selected...
just hold down the 'Option' key on a Mac, 'Alt' key on a PC... and use '>', '<' to extend and play around with the letter spacing... mine was mixed because I was playing around with it before... but with it all selected... all in and out. Good thing about that one there...
and a lot of these textual cuts, it works across all kind of typography programs... Word, Illustrator, InDesign, all sorts of stuff... you can do individual ones, just have your cursor flashing here... hold down 'Option' key on a Mac, 'Alt' key on a PC... and use that '>', '<', and then you can kind of work with... you know, specific letter spacing, not the whole thing, happy days.
Let's put a 'Return' in, type something... because what we can do is select it all... and to automatically adjust the line height...| it's 'Option Shift', or 'Alt Shift' on a PC... and those same '>', '<', they do loads for us... nice, font sizing can be done as well, that's 'Command Shift... and the same '>', '<', you can see, my font sizing going up and down...
oh, so good. Sometimes though you want to scale text, and you're just looking for a size... you don't know what it is, and smashing through that shortcut can be troublesome... sometimes you just want to scale it up, you're like, "It's not scaling it up"... if you hit the 'K' shortcut to get to Scale... that option up here, instead of Move, hit 'Scale'...
then you can drag it, I do this a lot when I'm trying to figure out... like Hero text and kind of like large display text... I don't know what size it needs to be, I'm doing a little bit of that... and then I might go in here and jump back to 'V' for my Selection tool... and go, actually... what is it close to, it's kind of stuck between sizes...
is it going to be 32... 24? Both of those are not going to work, I'm going to end up doing 28... 28 ½, but I use the K tool to kind of get me close to where I want to be. Other shortcuts that are useful is... just the kind of basic typography ones, I use all the time...
'Command I' is italics, 'Command B' will turn a regular text into... toggle between regular and bold... strike through is another one that I use quite a lot... it's 'Command Shift X', or 'Ctrl Shift X' on a PC... I'm a nerd for lines and lists, and bullet points. Another one is 'Command Shift' again, but type '8' on your keyboard...
that's 'Ctrl Shift 8', same shortcuts again, but 7 kind of goes between...| bullet points and numbers, so 8 is bullets, 7 is numbers... there are other ones, I don't use them very often... so I'm assuming nobody uses them... which is probably untrue, but you can find them under... up under here, under the 'F', under Text, you can see these ones in here... so Create Link I use quite a bit as well...
but in terms of some of these, I don't know, some of these ones... Align Text Left I never remember... I should remember the Text Align Center, I'll add these to the shortcut sheets... in my case, 'Option Command R' and 'L' kind of makes sense, left and right... 'T' for Center, I don't know... you and the way you work, might find some of these other ones useful...
but the cool thing about all of these is that... it works in Word, works in Google Docs, it works in Illustrator... and InDesign, and Photoshop... all of these same shortcuts, super helpful. One last little tip and trick, is new for Figma... we've kind of seen it before but let's tie it in together...
there is now a Find and Replace for type... there never used to be up until recently, so if you're an old school user... and this is new, you could do Find and Replace for text... you'll find the word Figma, and replace it with "Dan"... okay, 'Replace All'... Yes, he does, except when he's doing letter spacing...
'Option' or 'Alt', '>', '<'... making it mildly better. Those are some of the shortcuts that I use all the time... can be a little overwhelming... so print out the shortcut sheet and tackle one or two every day... see which ones stick...
all right, that's it, I will see you in the next video.
