Founder of Bring Your Own Laptop & Chief Instructor

instructor

I discovered the world of design as an art student when I stumbled upon a lab full of green & blue iMac G3’s. My initial curiosity around using the computer to create ‘art’ developed into a full-blown passion, eventually leading me to become a digital designer and founder of Bring Your Own Laptop.

Sharing and teaching are a huge part of who I am. As a certified Adobe instructor, I've had the honor of winning multiple Adobe teaching awards at their annual MAX conference. I see Bring Your Own Laptop as the supportive community I wished for when I was first starting out and intimidated by design. Through teaching, I hope to bring others along for the ride and empower my students to bring their stories, labors of love, and art into the world.
True to my Kiwi roots, I've lived in many places, and currently, I reside in Ireland with my wife and kids.

You're thinking, "Hope this is not a video about locking and unlocking layers"... this doesn't feel very advanced course-ey... somehow I'm going to advanced locking layers you... it's a short video, good stuff to know. First up, locking your layer, the caveman way, see the little lock over here... there's a shortcut, 'Command Option L', 'Ctrl Option L'...

it'll be in your shortcut list, you're probably at shortcut overload by now... but that one's same as hide, you hold the same two keys down... one is H, one is L, so hide and lock kind of tied together... but again not very advanced course-ey, we can do that... where it gets better is, sometimes there are locked items... so this one here is locked...

what I can do is, remember that trick from earlier? Who remembers how I kind of show that list... of what's underneath my cursor, because I can't click it... but if I hold down my 'Command' key on a Mac, you got it... 'Ctrl' key on a PC, and if I right click, it gives me that nice sweet Layer Order... and it allows me to select even things that are locked...

and then I can use that shortcut to unlock it, is that helpful? It can be, anyway. Other things we can do is, sometimes you just want to unlock everything... somebody else's document, why are some things locked, you're not sure... there is an option, the shortcut is unintelligible... so what we'll do is, we'll do our quick actions...

so 'Command /', or 'Ctrl /', and let's go to 'Unlock'... there's an 'Unlock All Objects', there's the shortcut there... 'Option Shift Command L' on a Mac... and it'll be 'Alt Shift Ctrl L' on PC... do not remember that one, you won't use it enough... but the quick actions gives us access to it...

and it'll just dive into every single thing on this whole page... not on all the pages, just this page, but it will unlock it all. One of the things that you might bump into is, let's have a look... I'm going to, let's have a look at something complicated, this thing here... I'm going to lock it, using my shortcut... 'Command Shift L', Ctrl Shift L' on a PC...

and you end up in here, you're like, down here, like see these little dots... like, where are these dots from? We know now, because you saw me lock it... but if these dots are in here, you're like... "You're not locked, why can't I move you?"... you know, you're like, "Why can I still not move you in my card?"  I can see you, I can unlock you, it's because the parent is locked, there you go.

All right, that's all I got for locked layers, you're dismissed... I'll see you in the next video.
