Founder of Bring Your Own Laptop & Chief Instructor

instructor

I discovered the world of design as an art student when I stumbled upon a lab full of green & blue iMac G3’s. My initial curiosity around using the computer to create ‘art’ developed into a full-blown passion, eventually leading me to become a digital designer and founder of Bring Your Own Laptop.

Sharing and teaching are a huge part of who I am. As a certified Adobe instructor, I've had the honor of winning multiple Adobe teaching awards at their annual MAX conference. I see Bring Your Own Laptop as the supportive community I wished for when I was first starting out and intimidated by design. Through teaching, I hope to bring others along for the ride and empower my students to bring their stories, labors of love, and art into the world.
True to my Kiwi roots, I've lived in many places, and currently, I reside in Ireland with my wife and kids.

Hi everyone, in this video we're going to tidy up... this big old mess that we've started... this video is totally skippable, if you want... because I'm just going to tidy up the components... we'll cover a few shortcuts, but only ones you already know... I'm just going to set up a better way for my main components...

at the moment they're just dabbled everywhere. All right, this is what I mean, I'm going to put all my main components... inside this container, of a phone, so that it's easier to design... I'm going to move these over just so that stuff's not everywhere... and so I can use my sweet 'N' shortcut that we learned earlier... 'N', 'N', 'N', 'N', rather than using, earlier on, we went N, and it just...

flew around all the frames I had lying everywhere... so that's what we're going to do... oh yeah, we're going to make the icons purple, all right, let's do it. I'm going to start by just making a big old frame over here... and we're going to call this one "Main Components". I'm going to give it a background color...

just as a good contrast to the phone... nice and big... let's do the easy ones, so measurements can go in here... going to make sure it's inside my main components frame... you can go... down here, for the moment...

colors, can go in here as well... these components can go across... where are they going to go? Squeeze in there... and if I 'Shift 2', and zoom in, I can just tidy these up a little bit... remember, these are just stray components...

but they are main components, which is good, 'Shift 1'... and what else can go over, that can go in the bin... that was just an example... you're like "Hey, I wouldn't make that, you can keep yours."  Other things we need, what I'd like to do is... this, this, and this are not very useful... just lying on their own, especially when you're trying to design your event card ...

and you've got to say, all right, I'm going to design it over here... but I need to keep an eye on, over here, that's not good... so what I'm going to do is I'm going to create a place... where all my main components can live... separate from my production, phone's over here, just going to have a separate one... over here, that's just going to contain my main components...

so I can design over here, and they just get reflected over here. So I'm just duplicating this one, going to have to make this all a lot bigger... zip, add your own sound effects, so I'm going to use this now... as my placeholder... at the moment you can see, it's called iPhone 14, I'm going to call this one... "App Components"...

and inside of here I've got instances, I don't want instances, I don't want you... I want my main component hiding in here... so that when I do do designs it reflects on all these other pages. So what I can do is, I can say, I want to cut you, my main component... and who remembers that sweet shortcut where we--  I want to switch this out, I want a piece to replace even, remember what it is? It is 'Command Shift R' on a Mac, 'Ctrl Shift R' on PC, you got it...

so I just switched out that instance for my main component... going to turn on my grids, who remembers the shortcut for grid? 'Shift G'... if you hit Shift H, I do that all the time, let's have a look... 'Shift H', flip horizontally... tap it all the time, by accident, 'Shift G'.

So now I can line this up and say, actually, I want you there... can you see why I do this, it's so that when I do adjust this now... when I say, actually, I want this to be over here... it's actually reflecting in my different production frames... this is just like the control of them all... and because - I'm undoing - because it's actually laid out on a phone...

I can actually get the spacing and everything correct. Same with this down here, this is an instance, because I duplicated off here... I want my main, where is he hiding? There he is, he's on this one, so I'm going to cut him as well... and use that same sweet shortcut... 'Command Shift R', or 'Ctrl Shift R' on a PC...

'Shift 2', and now he is that main component... so when I am doing design changes... again, when I start messing with stuff... it's actually doing on all these different Artboards... that one there is not even changing... oh, he's got some overrides on him for the bigger phone, there we go.

So what else have we got? This needs to have a Home... he's a main component, I'm going to cut him... I'm going to click on this instance here... 'Command Shift R', 'Ctrl Shift R' on a PC, getting sick of that, aren't you? 'Shift 2', there you go, he is a logo...

and he's got a stripe down the middle, what is that? It's the grids... shortcut for grids, 'Shift G', not Shift H. All right, let's have a little look, N key... there's my last Android phone, I've got this giant frame up here, I don't need... I'm going to select it and delete it...

N key, and what have we got? So I've got main components... and then just my three production phones here... awesome. Last thing I'm going to do is, you, main component... hold down the 'Option' key on a Mac, 'Alt' key on a PC, to get both sides...

because I want a bit of, don't do that... I want these to be down here, they're just a bit more useful... to be able to see them while I'm working... and this whole thing is too close... move over, please, Sir, there we go... and now it's weird it's not lined up...

there we go. The last thing I want to do before we move on is I want to--  I could do it to the instances but I actually... want to do it to these components down here, my main components... and I want to make them my selection color... I want to use my document colors, local colors, I want to use that one... so they change all through the document...

now that we've got some colors to work with. All right, that's it for this video, a little bit of tidying out... do I do this as I go, no, I end up getting to a point... where I'm like, this is messy... I need to fix it up, and then I tidy it up... or when I have to share my file with somebody else, then I tidy it up...

and go through and start naming stuff... till then it can get a little bit messy, anyway... all right, that is it, I will see you in the next video.
