Founder of Bring Your Own Laptop & Chief Instructor

instructor

I discovered the world of design as an art student when I stumbled upon a lab full of green & blue iMac G3’s. My initial curiosity around using the computer to create ‘art’ developed into a full-blown passion, eventually leading me to become a digital designer and founder of Bring Your Own Laptop.

Sharing and teaching are a huge part of who I am. As a certified Adobe instructor, I've had the honor of winning multiple Adobe teaching awards at their annual MAX conference. I see Bring Your Own Laptop as the supportive community I wished for when I was first starting out and intimidated by design. Through teaching, I hope to bring others along for the ride and empower my students to bring their stories, labors of love, and art into the world.
True to my Kiwi roots, I've lived in many places, and currently, I reside in Ireland with my wife and kids.

Hi everyone, in this video we're going to do find and replace... which is interesting, easy... we'll push it a little bit further... when we're dealing with really complex Figma files, so let's jump in. So we're on our Layers panel here, not many people know... you can do a search in the Layers panel...

let's say I want to find "Welcome"... I've got it on a few pages, got both text boxes with the word Welcome in it... and I've got some frames called Welcome Screen. A nice way you can use it, is I can hold down my... 'Command' key on my Mac, 'Ctrl' key on PC, and just select all three of them... they go this kind of weird yellow color, which freaked me out when I first saw it...

hey, I didn't make you yellow, it just means it's highlighting it... and I can just do some really simple changes... size wise, you might just use it for this simple fact here... select lots of things at a time without having to Shift click everything. You can take it to the next level, which is... see this little settings here, you can say, 'Find and Replace'...

so I'm going to say, 'Find' "Welcome", and change it with "Start"... 'Replace All'. It's a good way of going through, might be some buttons that you've named... and the initial design had Login, but now... to keep everything consistent it's going to be Sign In... or things like that, where you just want to find everything in the document...

do a Find and Change, I'm going to undo that... and you can take it further and say... actually, just find the ones, because I've used lowercase... you can say 'Match the Case', that might be helpful. So let's turn it off, one thing with Replace, what I really wanted to do... is untick Replace...

I feel like I could turn it off... I don't know if you'll find it that way, just click on 'Find', here you go... because when Replace is on there's not much down here... but when I go back to Find... and I go back to my Settings, look at all this extra stuff... let's talk about the extra stuff, I'm going to...

turn off this Filter option here with Match Case... and let's, up the top here do a search for Early Bird... I'm just going to type in "early"... way too much stuff, it's been used loads, there's loads of... components, frames, instances of those frames... those instances have variables, it gets messy.

So what you can do is, go in here and say... actually, show me everything that is, maybe a main component... there's my one main component and the different variables... you can see, it even moves to them... or you might say, actually show me my instances of this... I got lots of instances, but it's a good way of filtering all images...

that have a specific name, only find the text, you get the idea. One last little trick is... remember, we being able to rename everything... say you selected all of this, you can actually just select them all... I've got every single thing, I might delete them... right now, hit 'Del', don't want to do that, oh wow...

that broke the Figma... you wait there, I'm going to try and fix it... all right, my Tab's stopped working... oh please, I hope it's okay, you wait there again. I'm back, and it did crash, and did all the early bird instances go? They did, oh man, how do I get back?

Oh, this is a good learning process for us... I'll pretend like it was meant to be part of the course, I'm going to go into--  so nothing selected, go up here, go to 'Show Version History'... and in here, I'm going to go back... I didn't save it on purpose, but there are some auto saves from earlier on... so I'm going to click it, click it here... hey, they're all back, so you, my friend, are going to restore to this version...

and if you ever do this, like me, you try and work with it... you can't do anything, can't select anything... you got to hit 'Done' up the top... it's a weird place for it... all right, where were we? We're doing searches, we're doing Early Bird...

we want just the instances of it, I'm going to select it all... I'm going to select the first one, hold 'Shift', grab them all... now I'm going to hit 'Command R' to rename them... actually, this is bulk renaming, let's do this in a separate video... just so it's nice and squared away for you in the course content... bulk renaming is super helpful.

That is it for find, replace, selecting multiple things in your Layers panel... maybe making adjustments, maybe changing the text... not very spectacular, but very important way... of speeding up your daily Figma workflow... all right, on to the next video.
