Founder of Bring Your Own Laptop & Chief Instructor

instructor

I discovered the world of design as an art student when I stumbled upon a lab full of green & blue iMac G3’s. My initial curiosity around using the computer to create ‘art’ developed into a full-blown passion, eventually leading me to become a digital designer and founder of Bring Your Own Laptop.

Sharing and teaching are a huge part of who I am. As a certified Adobe instructor, I've had the honor of winning multiple Adobe teaching awards at their annual MAX conference. I see Bring Your Own Laptop as the supportive community I wished for when I was first starting out and intimidated by design. Through teaching, I hope to bring others along for the ride and empower my students to bring their stories, labors of love, and art into the world.
True to my Kiwi roots, I've lived in many places, and currently, I reside in Ireland with my wife and kids.

Hi everyone, class project time... I want you to do this animation and share it... so that kind of Houdini effect... the Houdini effect I made up, nobody else calls it the Houdini effect... just in case you swag around the office saying... "Just did the Houdini text effect"...

they're not going to know what you're talking about, I kind of made that up. So create the text animation on a Welcome screen... use the techniques we've used, we've learned in the last few videos... I want you to experiment with the custom spring animation... find something that works for you... record a video and share the link for the video in the Assignment section...

love to see it on social media as well... this is optional, but if you do... use the #FigmaAdvanced so I can find it... and if you can, and you want to, a link back to the course that you're doing... just so that other people on social media go like... "Well, I want to do that too, I want to come join Dan's course."  It's a great cross-sell for me, to get more students involved, I'd appreciate it...

you don't have to. When you are sharing, choose your poison, upload them to all... make sure you tag me when you do upload it, and don't forget... remember the stern talking to I gave you in the earlier video where... comment on two other people's work, you upload your one... playing it forward makes the world go round.

All right, so enjoy experimenting with your spring... you're probably going to have to rewatch the video because you're like... "It's broken, why can't I do the mask, why is it not animating? Oh, I've got to do the variants... it's all part of the fun of learning something new... is the actual doing of it, to find all those holes and bugs...

if you do have any trouble... or maybe I haven't explained something right in the video... let us know in the comments, on how you fixed it... all right, go forth, make an animation... I'll see you in the next video.
