Founder of Bring Your Own Laptop & Chief Instructor

instructor

I discovered the world of design as an art student when I stumbled upon a lab full of green & blue iMac G3’s. My initial curiosity around using the computer to create ‘art’ developed into a full-blown passion, eventually leading me to become a digital designer and founder of Bring Your Own Laptop.

Sharing and teaching are a huge part of who I am. As a certified Adobe instructor, I've had the honor of winning multiple Adobe teaching awards at their annual MAX conference. I see Bring Your Own Laptop as the supportive community I wished for when I was first starting out and intimidated by design. Through teaching, I hope to bring others along for the ride and empower my students to bring their stories, labors of love, and art into the world.
True to my Kiwi roots, I've lived in many places, and currently, I reside in Ireland with my wife and kids.

Hi there, in this video we're going to do two things... we're going to reset the font, back to kind of the factory-- into that Figma users... and also, I'll show you, disappointingly, that you can't set the defaults... not a persistent default for the fonts... but I'll show you a kind of a workaround-ish, all right, let's jump in. The first one is resetting your font...

sometimes you'll be doing something, you're like "Why is it still doing that?"... how do you get back to normal? There is no reset font... what you can do though is just close Figma, goodbye, reopen it... and now when I start typing, it starts typing in the default, there you go... so just close it and open it again...

weird fact about Figma, when I start typing on top of color it goes white... when I go over here and I start typing, can you see, it goes black... it is just clever Figma stuff. The next one is, how do I change the default forever... say we're not using Inter, we're using Roboto... and I want it to be 16 point...

I can kind of, it doesn't work, this is a short answer... I can go up to 'Text', and I can say... I can go to 'Edit', and I can go 'Set as Default Properties'... so when I start typing the next thing, look, it's still that... problem is, I'm going to close it and open again, you wait there... start typing again...

we're back to Inter which is the current default for Figma... there you go, that doesn't work... so it sucks, but it's good to know... there is no way of saving the default at the moment... let me know in the comments if that changes. You can obviously pick a style...

so I've got a font, I'm going to click on my little 'Styles' panel... I'm going to hit '+'... and this is going to be, say this is my "H3"... or I can get consistency by selecting them all... going to here, and saying, actually, you're all the H3... and when I start typing, it'll remember...

I'm not sure why I'm typing default every time... 'Esc' to get out of it, it remembers it... but if I open and close it, guess what's going to happen, you wait there... it's back to Inter... kept the font size, weirdly, but that's not that helpful... but luckily we've got styles, so there you go.

Getting back to a default font is just opening and closing it... and you can't set persistent defaults... it just remembers the last thing you did... even if you tell it to set the default properties, when you open and close it... it's back to square one... at the moment, but there you go, we use styles...

all right, that is it, I'll see you in the next video.
