Founder of Bring Your Own Laptop & Chief Instructor

instructor

I discovered the world of design as an art student when I stumbled upon a lab full of green & blue iMac G3’s. My initial curiosity around using the computer to create ‘art’ developed into a full-blown passion, eventually leading me to become a digital designer and founder of Bring Your Own Laptop.

Sharing and teaching are a huge part of who I am. As a certified Adobe instructor, I've had the honor of winning multiple Adobe teaching awards at their annual MAX conference. I see Bring Your Own Laptop as the supportive community I wished for when I was first starting out and intimidated by design. Through teaching, I hope to bring others along for the ride and empower my students to bring their stories, labors of love, and art into the world.
True to my Kiwi roots, I've lived in many places, and currently, I reside in Ireland with my wife and kids.

Hi everyone, has this happened, and you're like... "Oh, why doesn't it fit in my prototype, it's too small or too big"... in this video I'll show you how to change it, both in the Prototype mode... where we change the phone that your frame sits in... and also show you how to go the other way... and try and get your frame to match the giant phone...

all right, let's dig in. The first one, while in Prototype mode... you can just change the device to match what you've got... you can select on your frame here... go to 'Design' mode and just work out your width and height... so I'm using the 390, 844...

so Prototype mode, I can just double check, under my 'Prototype Settings'... just have nothing selected, and I can go into here and pick my device... I can go to 'None', and that just gets rid of everything... or I can go through and figure out which one I was using, was using this one... and change my phone... and let's check it out, there you go, it fits.

We'll deal with the cutout soon in this course... that's how to get it to match up... always going to be new sizes... and that's why we're building these responsive designs... so that if we do want to use that Max - I'm undoing it to go back. - I can say, you, 'Shift E', back to Design...

are now not just a general frame... not an iPhone 14, going to use the 14 Pro... I can't remember which one I was using, there you go... can you see, it adjust, undo, redo, if yours is not adjusting... like this one down the bottom here... before you adjust it, he should be set to, not left and bottom...

I'm going to undo, undo, I'm going to say... you need to be, not left and bottom, you need to be 'Left' and 'Right'... that'll fix that one, so you, 'Frame', 'Pro Max'... oh, look how responsive it was, these are adjusting... it'll be down to left and right... and to make sure that we're using Auto layouts...

and all the other good stuff that makes this thing nice and squidgy... you're always going to be chasing the new phone size which is always fun. Now one thing there, I want to kind of double back and re-record... because I was jumping between Design... and looking at this frame, and giving it a frame size... that's what we did to kind of make it this Max size, which is great...

it is separate from the way you prototype it... so in 'Prototype', I have 'Prototype Settings'... I could have something separate, these can act independently... you can't make it change per frame... so you have different sizes, it's not going to jump all the way through... what you might do is, actually, just go to 'Custom Size'...

then it's going to get rid of the chrome around the outside... "What does he mean by chrome?"  That's the stuff around the outside, can you see, it just disappeared... I'll get the editor to turn it back on, turn it back off... turn it back on, turn it back off... but you get the idea, right? You can still make it look like a phone...

and it means, when I cycle through to the different sizes... it's going to just stretch and fit in this window... it's not going to put the chrome around the outside, which is quite cool... the chrome is the phone bit around the outside. The other thing they did was - on Prototype mode. - if I go in here and say...

up the top here are the kind of newest ones... I'm sure you'll be up to like iPhone 30 when you're looking at this... they have put in some of the old ones... and there's even older ones down the bottom here... if you scroll down the bottom, so we're doing 14, but it's like... there's a few missing, right?

They went to this older size... because it's a good generic old phone size, and it's highly used for testing... but down the bottom here are some other ones... just watch down the bottom there... it might be the thing that you're missing, good old Pixel 2, cool. One last thing is, if you do think, you know, change the size to much bigger...

is there an automatic update... when I go, you are going from that frame size to, I don't know... it's the biggest one we got, yeah, we'll just do that... there is no automatically stretched stuff you need to set it up beforehand... with our constraints, like we looked at earlier... auto layouts, all that good stuff...

you need to put that initial work into some of your components... and it pays off later on when there is that new phone that you've got to test on. So that is how to update the phone so that it fits... just change the presentation side, or go and update... in Design mode, and go and update the frame to match what you need it to be... all right, that is it, I will see you in the next video.
