Founder of Bring Your Own Laptop & Chief Instructor

instructor

I discovered the world of design as an art student when I stumbled upon a lab full of green & blue iMac G3’s. My initial curiosity around using the computer to create ‘art’ developed into a full-blown passion, eventually leading me to become a digital designer and founder of Bring Your Own Laptop.

Sharing and teaching are a huge part of who I am. As a certified Adobe instructor, I've had the honor of winning multiple Adobe teaching awards at their annual MAX conference. I see Bring Your Own Laptop as the supportive community I wished for when I was first starting out and intimidated by design. Through teaching, I hope to bring others along for the ride and empower my students to bring their stories, labors of love, and art into the world.
True to my Kiwi roots, I've lived in many places, and currently, I reside in Ireland with my wife and kids.

Hi everyone, over here in my Layers panel, look, it is messy... my designer OCD is kind of like flashing, is a red light going... so in this video I'm going to show you how to find Layer Zen... using a few little shortcuts, all right, let's jump in, Namaste. The first and best one, is have nothing selected, which is the Esc key... smash that a couple of times, then just hold down 'Option', or 'Alt', Mac or PC...

and hit 'L', look at that, everything just collapses, oh... somebody else's document, that everything is everywhere... something that you're working on, it's messy, messy... have nothing selected and hit 'Option L', or 'Alt L'. Another handy one is, let's say this section here, we want to go into it... and I kind of want to go into this one, and you kind of like...

want to toggle them all down, just like expose yourself... well, don't expose yourself, uncollapse yourself... I want to see what's going on in here... what we can do is - let's twirl this all up  - is we can select the layer first, you got to select it first... and then hold down the 'Command' on a Mac, 'Ctrl' on a PC... just click on the chevron there, little arrow thing, then it just like...

unpacks everything, exposes itself to the world... that gets even handier... actually, doing on this page, it's too complex, so let's look at something else. Let's say this animations page, there's not a lot going on in here... to expose them all, I have nothing selected... I can just select one, but can actually just have nothing selected...

remember, 'Esc', or click in the background, do a 'Command A'... or 'Ctrl A' to select everything... and then do that exact same trick. So I'm going to hold 'Command' on my Mac, 'Ctrl' on PC... and it opens up everything... there's only two things on this one, but you can see on this one...

especially, if you're working with Community work ... where somebody else has done it, and you just want to kind of like unpick it... you're like, "What is in here?"  Just select either one layer, or do a 'Select All', and select everything... and then just 'Command' click it... and it kind of twirls it up, and it also collapses it as well... similar to the Option L, maybe you'll just do that, it's up to you.

Here, select all, hold down 'Command', or 'Ctrl', everything gets opened up... nice... click it again, holding that same key, everything closes. Other things, just get your layers in order, if you've got a small screen... up here, if you're not using Pages... you can actually just click this arrow here, and Pages go away...

if you're just working on one page you don't need Pages... maybe you've got lots of pages... you just want them to go away while you're working... you can use PgUp and PgDn to get to them. What you can also do is, you can drag this bottom bit... so if you've got lots of pages and it's taking out lots of room...

just make it smaller... you can still scroll within here, it's a nice way of tidying it up. The last thing, we've done before, is you can actually resize this... sometimes you're working with stuff, let's have a look, select all... 'Command' click it, I don't have any really long names... this one here, I'm going 'PgUp'...

select all, and click this one... it's actually getting quite far down this list, it's actually not that far... but you can drag this in and out... to either save space or be able to see all the layer names... depending on how deep it's going. The last bit of Layer Zen, actually, is going to be in Preferences...

what happens by default is, if I use my Rectangle tool, so R tool... same for frames, anything... what Figma will do, when I drag it out, can you see, Rectangle 24... if I 'Option', or 'Alt' drag it to get a duplicate... I get 25, if I hit 'Command D', or 'Ctrl D, I get another one, 26... so it names them because it sees that last suffix...

prefix?, Suffix... the number at the end there... goes, I'll add one more, which can be handy, sometimes though it's not handy... you just want them all to be called 24, whatever the first name was... you can, in your Preferences... so 'Figma', 'Preferences', there's one here that says 'Rename Duplicate Layers'...

now you can see, my 27, if I duplicate him... I get another 27, 27, 27, up to you. Which do I like? I normally just leave it as the factory standard one... and then get annoyed when it renumbers, when I don't want it to... so I'm going to turn mine back...

it's one of those preferences where it's not black or white... or yes, or no, it's kind of, I need a half on and half off, there you go... now you know you can do it. All right, that's it, from the whole video, if you remember nothing else... have nothing selected, which is the Esc key, hit 'Option L', or 'Alt L'... and it just tidies up all these things, they did nothing...

let's open it up, everything's open, and have nothing selected... and go 'Option L', 'Alt L' on a PC, it's my favorite one... all right, all the Layer Zen, done, I'll see you in the next video.
