Founder of Bring Your Own Laptop & Chief Instructor

instructor

I discovered the world of design as an art student when I stumbled upon a lab full of green & blue iMac G3’s. My initial curiosity around using the computer to create ‘art’ developed into a full-blown passion, eventually leading me to become a digital designer and founder of Bring Your Own Laptop.

Sharing and teaching are a huge part of who I am. As a certified Adobe instructor, I've had the honor of winning multiple Adobe teaching awards at their annual MAX conference. I see Bring Your Own Laptop as the supportive community I wished for when I was first starting out and intimidated by design. Through teaching, I hope to bring others along for the ride and empower my students to bring their stories, labors of love, and art into the world.
True to my Kiwi roots, I've lived in many places, and currently, I reside in Ireland with my wife and kids.

Hi everyone, in this video we are going to install Adobe Fonts into Figma... they're not in there by default, there's kind of two pathways... we'll start with the desktop version of Figma... that is downloaded and kind of installed on your machine... then we'll do the web version, they're slightly different. Now Adobe Fonts is a paid part of the Adobe license...

if you don't have this paid subscription, you can skip this video... can't use Adobe Fonts... or at least you can only use the free ones... and often the free ones are already installed into Figma anyway... because Figma uses Google Fonts as its base... those are free commercial use fonts...

but we've got a subscription to Adobe Fonts, and the library is a lot bigger... some really cool fonts in here, and I want to use them. So first of all we need to find an Adobe font... you can start by, I've got like the Creative Cloud app open on my Mac here... open it up on PC, kind of need this open... and I can see, I can manage my fonts...

so first of all, finding a font in Creative Cloud isn't that useful... you can just go to this, fonts.adobe.com... login with your Adobe user name, and forget your password... spend ages trying to reset that, finally get in, and then find a font... then we go 'Browse all fonts', and it's going to pick something random... oh, look, Variable Fonts, right at the top, because it's kind of important.

I'll ignore that, I'm going to pick, I'm going to pick one, wait there... 10 hours later... "Just pick any font, Dan," I've decided I like this one, 'Rock Grotesk'. So all you need to do is activate the font... do I need it all? I'm going to turn them all on...

because I can... so you do this from the website, it sends a signal to your Creative Cloud app... and hopefully, in a second... hey look, there it is, and it's going to start activating it. Great, so it is now available, kind of like on my local machine, on my laptop... oh, here's the rest of them...

but you'll notice in-- let's have a look in Figma... if I grab this and say, actually, "Rock", there is no Rock font... no Rock Grotesk... so what you need to do generally, is just open and close Figma... so goodbye, Figma, welcome back, Figma... and hopefully now, under "Rock Grotesk"...

there it is, there, oh, how cool is that. Is it variable font? It is not... but, you saw, there is a lot of options, oh nice... if it's still not working, or you had fonts that were working and now they're not... what Creative Cloud does is, because you can install a zillion fonts...

what it does, periodically, it goes and says... "Nobody's used this file in a long time", can you see, Previous Active... this layout might change, you might have to dig around... for previously active or inactive fonts... so I have used this before, but they've all been turned off... why?, because, when I'm loading something like Photoshop or Illustrator...

it has to load all those fonts as part of its startup... and when you have like a bazillion, it takes forever. So what it does is, goes, it's sneakily, without asking goes... "You haven't used this in a very long time"... I'm just going to turn these off... and have the appearance of loading faster, and it does load faster...

but you might find that some of them get turned off... so you might have to come here and say, actually, turn that back on... and it'll switch to the Active Font menu... and then you'll have to close Figma, open it back up again... let me know if you're having any other problems, in the comments. With the desktop version, the big problem is...

making sure Creative Cloud, the app from Adobe is open... generally gets installed with everything else... and just make sure as well, and make sure that you restart Figma... close it down, open it back up. All right, for the people using the browser version... so I'm going to jump to Figma...

so the browser version, pretty much exactly the same as the desktop version... runs on the same kind of back-end stuff... what you need to do to make sure this works, is two things... you need to go to your 'Account', go to 'Settings'... and under 'Fonts' here, make sure 'Local Fonts' is enabled... if that's done you need something else...

if you go to figma/downloads, one of the options in here... will be the Font Installers... so choose your poison, Mac or PC... remember, this isn't required if you're going to be using the desktop only app... I generally just install it as well... because there's loads of times I'm working on other people's projects...

and I end up working in the browser, not knowing... because they work so similarly... so install that, and then you need to refresh your browser. So here in Figma, you open your document... and hit 'Refresh', and if that doesn't work close it down, open it back up... now I'm using Chrome here, and that's what Figma suggests...

it runs in different browsers... if you're having further quirkiness try Chrome, see if it fixes it... because I think that's what Figma supports more than anything... and that might be causing your issue... and from here it's exactly like the desktop version... you log into your Adobe account, you pick some fonts, you activate them...

make sure Creative Cloud is open on your computer... hopefully, find them in the Active Fonts... and then reload the browser, you should be away. All right everyone, that is how to get our Adobe fonts into our Figma file... all right, that is it, I will see you in the next video.
