Founder of Bring Your Own Laptop & Chief Instructor

instructor

I discovered the world of design as an art student when I stumbled upon a lab full of green & blue iMac G3’s. My initial curiosity around using the computer to create ‘art’ developed into a full-blown passion, eventually leading me to become a digital designer and founder of Bring Your Own Laptop.

Sharing and teaching are a huge part of who I am. As a certified Adobe instructor, I've had the honor of winning multiple Adobe teaching awards at their annual MAX conference. I see Bring Your Own Laptop as the supportive community I wished for when I was first starting out and intimidated by design. Through teaching, I hope to bring others along for the ride and empower my students to bring their stories, labors of love, and art into the world.
True to my Kiwi roots, I've lived in many places, and currently, I reside in Ireland with my wife and kids.

Hi everyone, in this video we're going to look at Artificial Intelligence... in particular, ChatGPT... for creating placeholder content and other UX tasks in Figma... if you roll in your eyes going, "Ah, not you too"... AI, yes, I am that guy... let's stick around, I'll show you, it's pretty useful...

especially if you are a lover of Lorem Ipsum... actually, quickly, we create event listings... some fictional ones we go and ask...|  our ChatGPT about what features should be in a particular app... and then ask to create a persona, we've got Alex... the results are pretty amazing, if nothing else, they're a great starting point. I'm using it all the time for things like this...

where I need to style up something... and I need some content that's not just Lorem Ipsum... we've all been to the site, hasn't changed in like a million years... so ChatGPT, is amazing for this... like I've written down some, like predefined things... I just type it in, it's amazing how good it gets it.

So I've asked for a fictional event listing for a techno event in Limerick... comes over, the title, date, location, it is spectacular. So wait for it to finish, how good is that, look, ready to roll... and then you can do things, like kind of just... I don't know, let's say I need it for 200... let's do, actually 300 characters or less...

kind of let it do its magic... there you go, 300 characters or less, cool, huh. Now this is free somehow, magically, it might not be when you're doing it... ChatGPT might not be the thing, but at the moment I'm really happy with it... let's say I want three variations of that for my listings... and I'll speed through this.

Look at that, variation 1, 2, and 3, all unique... you've got to be careful not to use this in a live site... and to write your body copy, and your text for a website... I know Google are tracking and punishing people using kind of AI created content... not sure how all that dust is going to settle... but my advice is not to use it on a live site.

It's really good for other things as well, let's say... got another one, like whenever I'm starting a brief... I'm actually designing this app, that's what I did for this particular course... I was like, I typed in something like this... so I actually don't want to regenerate, I want a new chat... and this one here is going to give me 10 main features for an event listing...

and I could do this, and it'd only take me half an hour, an hour... but it's pretty spectacular how close it gets to what I would get to in the end... and it's a good starting place even if nothing else... there you go, 10 features that we can use as a starting point... you can kind of keep trying to regenerate responses to get it tighter... closer to what you want.

Let's do one more that I use quite frequently... like the use cases are kind of endless... like I want to create a UX persona for my techno event... kick back, and relax, we get Alex, who's 25... he's in Berlin, of course... and it gives us background, like for me I find this part of the process...

I know, what I kind of want it to be, and I find it hard to get the words out... so for me it's a really great starting point... am I going to use this verbatim? Probably not... but man it's a good core starting point, or a template... man, oh, I am pretty, like I'm getting used to it now...

but man, this is new and exciting, if you haven't kind of gotten into AI... ChatGPT for UX, is a good, I don't know... feels like, actually something I can use in my work... rather than some maybe fluffy AI stuff in the future... down to earth, not on the ground, that's what I wanted... remember, I'm using ChatGPT, this might not be around...

ChatGPT might have gone rogue, and, I don't know... taken over a country by now, and might not be available... but I bet you there's another alternative for it... free, maybe, paid, maybe... anyway, it's a great way that I get placeholder texts... rather than Lorem Ipsum, which I used heavily in the past...

this is just text, don't get me started on some of the image generators.
