Founder of Bring Your Own Laptop & Chief Instructor

instructor

I discovered the world of design as an art student when I stumbled upon a lab full of green & blue iMac G3’s. My initial curiosity around using the computer to create ‘art’ developed into a full-blown passion, eventually leading me to become a digital designer and founder of Bring Your Own Laptop.

Sharing and teaching are a huge part of who I am. As a certified Adobe instructor, I've had the honor of winning multiple Adobe teaching awards at their annual MAX conference. I see Bring Your Own Laptop as the supportive community I wished for when I was first starting out and intimidated by design. Through teaching, I hope to bring others along for the ride and empower my students to bring their stories, labors of love, and art into the world.
True to my Kiwi roots, I've lived in many places, and currently, I reside in Ireland with my wife and kids.

Hello everyone. Have you got a big Figma file that's using images  that are way too big than you need? Figma is starting to report errors  'cause it's struggling with all the giant images. Just wanna resize everything. Fills images on their own. I wish there was a way of just downsizing everything  to an appropriate size.

Not too small, but not too big. Ah, there's a plugin for  that Tiny image compressor downsizer. Lemme show how it works. Alright. Uh, the way to resize all the images at the moment is  using a plugin. Uh, the one that I like is Tiny Image Compressor.

Reluctant to show you uh, plugins  'cause they change the update. I bit the UI will be a little  different by the time you get there. If you do find one that's better,  let us know in the comments as well. Alright? And the thing we're looking  for is this thing called the Downsizer. The only trouble with the downsizer is  that it's part of the pro account.

Okay? You get 15 tries, I think at the moment. You get 15 goes at doing this  and that might be enough for you for a long time, okay? And you might consider upgrading to the pro. It's a very cool app. Okay?

So all of these images have come  through at much larger sizes. Let's have a look at this water one here. So I'm gonna bring it in. I'm using this one  'cause it's the biggest in the exercise files. I got it from Unsplash. Okay?

You don't get a choice when  you bring in some of these images. Um, what size they come in, what quality,  especially if you're using a plugin. Okay, just dump some in there. Cool. So what I'm gonna do is, so it's coming at that size. I never need it that big.

So what I'm gonna do is use it in a more appropriate size,  kind of the same size as one of my image files,  same size as one of my phones. Okay? And what I can do, you can have nothing selected  and you can do them all. I'm just gonna do one to speed this up, okay? And the cool thing about it is,  can you see it's gonna downsize it at  twice the size I need it. So this is 844.

It's actually gonna do it at 1688. Gives me a bit of scope  and a bit of flexibility for exporting it  and being good enough quality. Okay? A good default for um, both mobile  and web is to have images at what they call at two x. Okay? Twice the size you need it  for very high resolution screens.

Perfect. So let's pretend I've got them all  ticked in the whole document. I'm gonna go downsize. It's all done. Very happy with itself. 10 megabytes saved.

Okay? And let's have a little look. So this image now is a lot smaller. How much smaller? Let's have a look. Remember our trick from earlier on?

We can go to inspect, okay? And go from code to table. And you should be able to click on the  image loads over there. I'm going to go save image. I'm gonna put it in my junk drawer. Messy, messy drawer.

And let's have a look. So it was 6.2 and it has gone through. And there you go. Oh look, look how much it's saved. Not 10 megabytes. I'm never sure how they calculate things like that,  but hey, it is 0.3 megabytes instead of six.

Okay? It's gonna make Figma work very well  and it's still gonna give you an appropriate image  size for exporting. When you do go send it to the developer. Happy days. Alright, that is it. So how to grab  and resize all the images, even the ones that are used  as a fill inside of a frame in Figma.

Thank you. Tiny image compressor,  even though you exaggerate your savings a little bit. 10 megabytes. I'm sure there's a reason. I don't know it. All right, there's it.

I will see it in the next video.
