Founder of Bring Your Own Laptop & Chief Instructor

instructor

I discovered the world of design as an art student when I stumbled upon a lab full of green & blue iMac G3’s. My initial curiosity around using the computer to create ‘art’ developed into a full-blown passion, eventually leading me to become a digital designer and founder of Bring Your Own Laptop.

Sharing and teaching are a huge part of who I am. As a certified Adobe instructor, I've had the honor of winning multiple Adobe teaching awards at their annual MAX conference. I see Bring Your Own Laptop as the supportive community I wished for when I was first starting out and intimidated by design. Through teaching, I hope to bring others along for the ride and empower my students to bring their stories, labors of love, and art into the world.
True to my Kiwi roots, I've lived in many places, and currently, I reside in Ireland with my wife and kids.

Hi everyone, it is class project time/challenge... the first one, challenge one is basically recreating what we've already done... so this line that moves along... create three pages, create three Nav links... it doesn't have to be Today, Weekend, Newest, it's up to you... so I want to test that this structure works ...

and this little line moves underneath it... so do that first, and then the extra, the challenging bit... is I want you to move to this... so the line's gone, and now there's a background that moves along... and can you see, the text changed to white underneath. So that's it, I want you to do the first line one first...

and take a video, screencast of that version... and then move to this one, and do some changing, why? Because it's a challenge with, I think, within your grasp, that you actually do... and it'd be interesting to see which way you tackle it... and then the very next video, you'll see in the list here... there is a completed version of this challenge...

where I will do it, this particular one... just so that you can compare the way that you tackled it... with the way that I tackled it... you might find that you like your way better... you might like the way that I do better... but don't you get that video yet, do it yourself...

see where you go, see where you get stuck... see how long it took you, how complicated yours was... and then compare it to how complicated mine was. Now also, when you are doing a video of this... if you've been doing screencasts now... maybe look to use your phone to record it...

so get out your phone, like right now I got my phone in my hand... and just record you going through it... and show a little bit of a desk space, dirty, clean, doesn't matter... just to make the reviewing of these... a little more interesting for everybody... have a little look at everybody's desk, see what's going on...

so a video of your animation... though it's not essential, you can just take a normal screencast. So I've listed everything in the class exercises... but I kind of, I don't know, it feels long and hard... I feel like that demo was better... create three pages, create a Nav with three different links...

get those to work, so they jump to every page... then get that line to move under... all the different Nav options, get it to bounce along. One thing I have added in here is the Version History... so whenever I'm working, often, when you get to this point, where, let's say -  let's go back to this one here, you're like, "Where is he?"  - say you've finished this one... and you want to move on to the next kind of option of it...

you might be keen to just go... actually, I want to save this in time so I can come back to it if I need to... we cover this in the Essentials, but let's cover it again here. So I have nothing selected, go up here and say, 'Version History'... you can say... "All right, I'm going to go and make this something completely different"...

so I just want to hit '+', and say, "Sub Nav"... let's say that we're up to the "Button Slide 1"... and we're going to do something else with a gradient... just means that later on you can come back to that version, once you carry on... once you've done it, hit 'Done', that's one thing... it kind of gets you a bit stuck in there...

so you carry on, carry on, carry on, change it all, mix it up... you know, make this thing, I don't know, a different color, and you wreck it all... and then you can say... actually, click off in the background, go back to my Version History... and say, I'm going to go back to there, check it out... you can just look at it, that's it...

and hit 'Done', and it'll jump back to where you were... or you can say, actually, just 'Restore the Version'. I'm going to go back to here, and completely go back to that bit... and then hit 'Done', now we'll kind of reset back to there. So save a Version History once you've done the Line challenge... and then do that Button challenge, which is...

change the line to a button, see how you go there... and get the background to move along like the line did... in addition, and the kind of challenging bit is... how do you get the color to change... can you see, it goes from white... to black, to white, when the button goes underneath it...

that's one of your challenges... bonus points if you change the button color as well... and triple bonus points for gradients, love me a gradient... share the video of both challenges, send your links in... and upload it to the Assignment section... also share it on social media, tag us with FigmaAdvanced...

pick your platform, or all of them... and make sure you jump in and give some feedback to two other people... send it forward. All right, that is the challenge, I'll go through it myself in the next one... but do it yourself first, see where you get stuck... see how you approach it, there's no right way, if it works, it works...

but then you can check out my one in the next video... all right, good luck.
