Founder of Bring Your Own Laptop & Chief Instructor

instructor

I discovered the world of design as an art student when I stumbled upon a lab full of green & blue iMac G3’s. My initial curiosity around using the computer to create ‘art’ developed into a full-blown passion, eventually leading me to become a digital designer and founder of Bring Your Own Laptop.

Sharing and teaching are a huge part of who I am. As a certified Adobe instructor, I've had the honor of winning multiple Adobe teaching awards at their annual MAX conference. I see Bring Your Own Laptop as the supportive community I wished for when I was first starting out and intimidated by design. Through teaching, I hope to bring others along for the ride and empower my students to bring their stories, labors of love, and art into the world.
True to my Kiwi roots, I've lived in many places, and currently, I reside in Ireland with my wife and kids.

Hey everyone, I've started a new document, someone else has shared a library with me.. 'Option 3', 'Alt 3' on a PC to open up libraries, sweet shortcut... so I've enabled it, I've started using it... but now I want to go and edit some of these styles... how do I go and do that? Let me show you how...

oh, and actually, we'll do a little recap for those people who... lots of you will be using libraries all the time, that'd be great... that's why we're jumping straight into this... because we covered it in the Essentials course... there'll be a few people who are just following on from the Essentials course... and haven't had a lot of practice so at the end of this...

I'll kind of recap some of the dos and don'ts for creating a library... but for now let's show you how to edit somebody else's library. First up you need to have a library shared with you... we covered this in the Essentials course... I'll cover that at the end of this video in case that's a distant memory... but let's say that you've got a library, it's been shared with you...

you've started using it, I've created this untitled file... I've started using some of the Bring Your Own Laptop brand elements... from the shared library... but now I want to edit them so there's two ways of doing it... color and font go together, they have a similar sort of method... so let's say this color here, I can see it is a Color Style, by the look of it...

if I click on it, I can go down to my 'Color Style'... and I can almost see the little options there... it's kind of hidden behind the question mark, but I'm going to click it... and can you see, for any of these, it's going to say... "I can't actually change it here, I need to go to the Style definition."  So it's going to jump back to that original file... the original library that it was created in, and I can edit it there...

let's have a little look at components, slightly different. So components, there's a couple of different ways I can do it... I can, over here you can see, here's my instance of this button... I've dragged it out from my Bring Your Own Laptop Style library... and I can click on this option here, it says, Go to Main Component in Library... or I can right click it and say, 'Go to Main Component', fonts are the same...

actually, haven't added the style to this one here... let's say I make this 'Paragraph'... when it's applied I want to break it, I want to click on it... go into there, the same as color, click on the little 'Settings' icon... and go into here, go to 'Style Definition'... doesn't matter which one of these you click, color, font, buttons...

you'll end up at the original creating file. If I make changes here now it'll spill back to the original file... and any other thing it's connected to, so be careful. If you can't get to this file it means that the file hasn't been shared with you... so that you can edit it, you've been put in the View only category... so what you need to do is go back to the file originator...

in this case, for me, it's Victoria Barrydale... she does the UX here at Bring Your Own Laptop... she created this file, and she reluctantly shared it with me to edit... because I was like, "I need it for the course"... she said, "Don't break anything"... so I'm not going to break anything.

So that is how to edit styles that have been shared with you... if you are locked out, what you're looking for the person to do... just so you know what it looks like, is, I'm going to go into here... first of all let's publish this Library we did this in the Essentials course... but if you haven't got to there, a cool shortcut is 'Option 3'... will open up your library...

or you can go to the 'Assets' panel and click on this... I need this one to be published, so this is the file that I'm working on now... publish it all first... and then the file needs to be shared with somebody... and if I type in "Daniel Scott", and I can have Can View... that means this other person, Daniel can use the styles...

like I did for that original file, but they can't edit them... you can go into here and say, actually, they can edit, there you go... that's what the person needs to do... if you can view libraries but you can't change them. One last little tidbit for those that are quite new to libraries... a reminder from the Essentials, is that the file must be...

the file that you want to share, can be in Drafts... but you can't share components... you can only share font and color styles from Drafts... once you've moved it into one of your team libraries  it has to be in a paid team library, not this free one... if I move this into this free one, I'm going to click 'Move'... I check it out, go into here...

and what you'll notice is, if I go to my library... 'Option 3', or 'Alt 3' on a PC, let's 'Publish'... if I unpublish it and publish it again... let's pretend it's for the first time... you can see here, 47 components will not be published... just the colors and the fonts...

so it needs to be in that, 'Command 1' to jump to home base... and this needs to be in the Paid panel... there we go , that is how to edit somebody else's styles... that have shared stuff with you... and just a quick little recap on libraries in general... all right, I'll see you next video.
