Founder of Bring Your Own Laptop & Chief Instructor

instructor

I discovered the world of design as an art student when I stumbled upon a lab full of green & blue iMac G3’s. My initial curiosity around using the computer to create ‘art’ developed into a full-blown passion, eventually leading me to become a digital designer and founder of Bring Your Own Laptop.

Sharing and teaching are a huge part of who I am. As a certified Adobe instructor, I've had the honor of winning multiple Adobe teaching awards at their annual MAX conference. I see Bring Your Own Laptop as the supportive community I wished for when I was first starting out and intimidated by design. Through teaching, I hope to bring others along for the ride and empower my students to bring their stories, labors of love, and art into the world.
True to my Kiwi roots, I've lived in many places, and currently, I reside in Ireland with my wife and kids.

This is the completion video, I set you a task in the last video... this is kind of where we're looking to end up... let me show you the way that I went... not the right way, not the best way, not the quickest way... just the way that I went, and you can compare it to yours... or if you got lost, hopefully, you can go "Ah, that's why I went wrong"...

forever learned, anyway, let's get into it. All right, the completion part, do I complete it? I don't know, I haven't practiced this... a lot of the kind of content in this course I make sure I do beforehand... we'll get the bugs, get the order right... I leave in some of the bits that I get lost in...

because I know that you end up kind of getting lost too... so it's good to see how to work your way out of things... but with this one I'm just going, I set the challenge... I think I know what I'm doing, let's actually just do it, Dan. So what I'm going to do is, I'm going to probably just reuse what I've got... and, boop...

I'm holding down the 'Option' key to drag it left and right... or 'Alt' key on a PC, does both sides... and you have to play with a Layer Order so I'm going to use my square brackets... what we're going to do with all the lines... because remember, one of the things we can't do with instances... we can't change layer order...

so all of these need to be down here... you, you, you, under all of the text. Now in terms of-- well actually, what I might do is, undo, undo, undo, undo... is do this all in one big go, so first of all I'm going to move them all down... then with them all selected, did you do yours individually? That might have been something you did...

so I'm going to do this, I'll hold down my 'Option' key, I can't... I can't do the widths altogether... so what I might do is see if I can... go to Mixed widths and go '+'... oh, will it go from the center? We'll see, 32...

they're getting the same widths, they didn't go from the center... but hey, that's okay. Now the big thing is the color change, right? So I feel like... that should still work, let's test it, 'Command Option Enter'... now there are a couple of ways of doing this...

you might have found a perfectly good way... that might even be quicker, that's okay... that's good, "It's not lining up very well, Dan"... we'll fix it later, let's get the mechanics working. The one thing is the color change... you could change it up here with say a variant...

you can make this into its own component... you could say, you're a component, and you've got two variants... we couldn't do it, we can't do it in here because it's inside of a Main Sub... but actually you could get down the worm hole, and it would work... make these a separate component out here, have two variants, put them back in... or down here, we can just say, remember things we can change...

we can't change the movement of just Today... but I can say, this has a color of '-', '+', you, going to be white... I'm going to copy the Fill... and I'm going to say, you there, are going to have this Fill... it's actually ended up with two Fills... and you, 'Paste'...

two Fills... and let's have a little look. Let me know in the comments how you did yours... I'll be interested to see just like what you did differently... that took longer, but still got to the same place... because it's handy for other people to go, like, "Oh yeah, I went that way too"...

or you might be like, "There is a better way," and I 100% agree there is... there's lots of different ways of doing it, and I bet you there's a better way. What I'm going to do now is play around with the spacing... because it is not good enough, what did I do, '+'... I'll do '+' another '16'... and shuffling along...

that feels better, except the height... down one, up one, down one, up one... anyway, you get the idea. All right, good work on the challenge, everyone... if you couldn't work it out... hopefully there was an "A-ha" moment in this video for you...

but that's it, I will see you in the next video, bye now.
