Hi everyone in this video we're going to look at relinking styles... or some people call it refactoring... we're going to tidy up all of our styles, out of our working document... pick them up, move them into a completely new document... nice and tidy, all on its own... and we're going to use this file to build future apps and websites from...
not the crazy person working document... that is a bad place to have all your main styles... especially when you move on to the next project... let me show you how to pull them out, put them into another document... whilst still maintaining connections that you might already have... to design files you've already created, like this one here...
they need to know where the new home for these styles is, automatically... all right, let me show you how to do that. So this is the original file that I've created a lot of my styles in... I've used those styles in a separate document... I've used some of the text styles, some of the color styles... components, we'll do in a next video...
but what I want to do now is I want to actually... grab all my styles out of this document... and put it into a main styles and components file... I just created a new document and gave it that name... there's nothing special about it... except that it can't be in Drafts...
so that it needs to be in a team library... styles will work on the free plan... if you want to be working with components... maybe you have to be in a Professional or above... basically, any kind of paid plan... so that's the kind of structure you need....
the main thing is that this can't be in Drafts otherwise it kind of breaks. So I'm going to go to this one here, this holds all my styles... I want to get them out, so I got nothing selected... I'm going to grab my primary color, all of these, in this group... and you have to use Cut, so 'Command X' on a Mac, 'Ctrl X' on a PC... you have to cut them, not copy them...
move them to your main styles and just paste them... hopefully, this appears down the bottom here, and let's go to 'Publish'. So we have to publish these because it wants to-- it says, let's move to this file... we're going to publish this, so that all the other files... like this one here, that is affected, should update, let's have a look. So now up here, let's have a look, let's review...
the color primary has moved from Event app... there's no visual changes, it's just moved... the way to prove it is, now if I click on this and I go to my 'Style'... and I click on the 'Settings' for it... I can go to the Style Definition, which used to point to this first tab... now hopefully, it'll point to the second tab...
there you go, tidy, tidy, look at us. let's go and do all of these colors... we can't grab, 'Shift' click... both the text and the colors... you got to do the grid separately from the colors from the text... let's say I want this, I want all of these colors, except for this...
except for creepy Dan... I want to hold down my 'Command' key on a Mac, 'Ctrl' key a PC... so I want these, I'm going to, remember, cut them... move them over here, paste them... it's going to say "Publish", "Yes, please"... move to this file...
remember, you'll get an indication on any app that you've used those colors on... that things have moved, but also on the original one you took it from. So I've taken it all from this, and this one is updated now... it says, "Hey, they've all gone"... I'm going to review it... these colors have moved from this file all the way over to this other one...
we can double check, this one here is now, oops, this one here, there he is... he is... there... he is, 'Settings', and go to 'Style'... they've all moved across, so any file that has used the colors... even the originating one, needs to be updated.
All right, let's finish by getting all of the grid styles as well... remember, it's cut, not copy... paste, publish, publish... and any files that have been using it... when they open up, will come up with that option to say it needs to be updated... either the originating file, or this one here.
What else we got? Let's get the Text Style, let's cut you... and put it in here... 'Publish', you get the idea. All right, so that is how to move your styles from one document to another... to kind of tidy them up, get them out of your working document...
and show everybody what a super efficient UX designer you are... with your master document... all right, that's it, I'll see you in the next video.
