Founder of Bring Your Own Laptop & Chief Instructor

instructor

I discovered the world of design as an art student when I stumbled upon a lab full of green & blue iMac G3’s. My initial curiosity around using the computer to create ‘art’ developed into a full-blown passion, eventually leading me to become a digital designer and founder of Bring Your Own Laptop.

Sharing and teaching are a huge part of who I am. As a certified Adobe instructor, I've had the honor of winning multiple Adobe teaching awards at their annual MAX conference. I see Bring Your Own Laptop as the supportive community I wished for when I was first starting out and intimidated by design. Through teaching, I hope to bring others along for the ride and empower my students to bring their stories, labors of love, and art into the world.
True to my Kiwi roots, I've lived in many places, and currently, I reside in Ireland with my wife and kids.

Hey everyone, it's class project Time. We're gonna use the Shape Builder tool. Let me quickly go through what the requirements are  and then I'll kind of backtrack  and give you a slightly more information on them. Think of an object that compliments your business. It might be something that you've done earlier on. Might be something else.

Obviously I picked Donut  'cause I'm doing a donut shop, but  coffee might be perfect for me. Something different for you. Hey, uh, I want you to draw a simple graphic of this. Don't get too hung up on it. I want you to pick some color swatches, okay? Some different colors to use.

And I want you to practice using the shape of the tool. So draw something. And the two things I want you to practice  with is the gap detection. So draw some lines that don't quite overlap. Just play around with it and coloring it in using  that cursor swatch preview. Now, when we had a bunch of different colors,  we use our left and right arrow, okay?

To color in our graphic, just practice  around with it, then upload it. So let me dive back in a little bit more. So obviously the object, pick it in. Don't get hung up too much on what kind of,  you know, are you a good drawer? Is it not a good drawer? Whenever I'm kind of stuck  with something like this, I've never  drawn a donut in my life.

I went to Google Images  and I went donor icon gives me something simple  to kind of try and redraw. You can use the pencil tool, you can use the ellipse tool. Any tools, you know how to use Pen tool, it's fine. Sometimes I go out to Dribble Gay with three Bs  and I just typed in Donut to get some other ideas. Often in here can be a bit more, I don't know, designy  and beautiful sometimes I'm just looking for simple. So once you've got it, again, don't worry about  how good it is or how good your drawing  is, it's about practice.

I want you to pick a few swatches. You can totally randomly pick swatches. Often what I'll do is I'll go to Adobe Color, okay? So it's color adobe.com okay? And I go to this one called Explore. And then I typed in Donut.

Okay? And there's colors kind of related to a donut. Now there's two ways of bringing in, uh,  I'm kind of going through a bit of this. Again, we've done a lot of this in uh,  the Illustrator Essentials. But I want everybody to kind  of be ready in case you jumped in  here, uh, straight to the advanced. And it's a good recap, okay?

Say you do like, uh, I dunno, you like these colors here. You've got two options. I can click  on just the colors, okay? And I go into this big version of it. This might change. They mess around with the UI in here all the time.

And every time I make a video it's like,  Hey, it's not there anymore. So you might have to find your way around a tiny bit. But what I'm gonna do is, can you  see if I can hover above the copy? I see those, um, they're called Hexa deone numbers. So I've copied them. I'm gonna jump into Illustrator.

Okay? I'm gonna open up my swatches panel, which is under window. I'm gonna go to swatches. Uh, there you go. I'm gonna add a swatch, okay? And I'm gonna type it in down here.

Okay? I'm just paste it in and you can  see there's my first swatch. Okay? The other way of doing it is  I'm gonna come out of this. So I'm in color adobe.com. I've logged in.

You can see my little face there. Okay? So I've logged in and what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna create  for this course a new creative card  library that I can share. So I can hit plus. And I'm gonna say make a new library. I already created mine called Illustrator Advanced.

Okay? And I've just got it selected here. And what that means is I can go in here  and say, okay, I'm gonna click on this. Actually, I don't have to go in there. Do I? Uh, I can hover above this.

And you see add to library. It'll add to whatever you've got selected at the top here. Okay? So just make sure you've  Got the one you really want it to go to. And I'm gonna say add the library. Just jump into Illustrator and give it a second.

Boop. There it appeared. Add drawing sound effect. What I can do is that feature. Have a look. Select both of these.

Let's go into my shape builder tool. And if I wanna turn this on,  it's owning in pick swatches from not my library,  but from my swatches panel. Okay? So it doesn't quite work the way I want it. So what you can do is just hover above it, right? Click it and say, add all of these colors.

Actually add the theme to swatches. Okay? This group is called a color theme. You could do it individually. There they all are. So now look, you see I'm using my left and right arrow  and I can say, I want you to be that color, that color.

I want you to be that color. Okay? So practice that, do a little drawing,  don't sweat it too much about what it looks like. If it's meant to look like the thing, it's meant  to use a bit of the pencil tool to add a bit of gaps. So you can see if you can fill them  and problems you might run into. Color it in and then share it with me.

This was a long class project explanation. I know, I figured. I wanted  to just get everyone skills up on some of these ones  and remind people if you haven't done it  before, how to use libraries and swatches. What I really wanna do is see what you draw, good  or bad, to make sure you share it  with me in the assignments, but also on social media. You'll see the tags here in the class projects, okay? And yeah, let us know how, how you feel about your drawing.

If you feel really bad about your drawing,  that's the perfect time to share it. Okay? 'cause it'll make others  that also have bad drawings to feel good. That's all right. We'll get better as the course goes along. But there you go.

Be brave. Share your drawings  and I will see you in the next video. Happy Shape Building.
