instructorI discovered the world of design as an art student when I stumbled upon a lab full of green & blue iMac G3’s. My initial curiosity around using the computer to create ‘art’ developed into a full-blown passion, eventually leading me to become a digital designer and founder of Bring Your Own Laptop.
Sharing and teaching are a huge part of who I am. As a certified Adobe instructor, I've had the honor of winning multiple Adobe teaching awards at their annual MAX conference. I see Bring Your Own Laptop as the supportive community I wished for when I was first starting out and intimidated by design. Through teaching, I hope to bring others along for the ride and empower my students to bring their stories, labors of love, and art into the world.
True to my Kiwi roots, I've lived in many places, and currently, I reside in Ireland with my wife and kids.

Hi everyone. This class project, we're gonna use the uh, ribbon technique while using the gradient mesh technique to make a little new badge. Okay? Or new ribbon thing that's gonna be added to a product in your shop. Okay? Or onto a packaging.
Something like that. Okay? So something that says new with a wavy thing on. It doesn't have to be like mine doesn't have to have the stripes, doesn't have to have the gradients. I just wanna see that blend. It could be a, a different kind of movement with that.
Uh, whop. I'll leave that up to you. Now for my one, the text is actually part of it. I kind of like grouped it together and whooped it. You can't really tell, but can you see that's the original text, the blue. Okay.
And it's kind of warped around it. I've done the gradient as well, okay, around the edges you can experiment with that. It's not essential. It's more about practicing with the wap. One thing you might run into when you're working on it yourself is I'll show you, um, I, you know, I made a duplicate of this back one. And um, what I did was, is remember earlier on we used the Pathfinder to either join them or we used the shape builder tool.
Okay? That's the width tool, shape builder tool to kind of combine them and sometimes they don't and sometimes they end up being two pieces, okay? In this case, turns out I could have used the width tool okay? To combine them. 'cause sometimes you end up with, I go the G key and more than one, uh, gradient. The envelope tool is just a bit strange sometimes.
So there's a couple ways of doing it. Clearly the width tool works great and just drag across them. Or what I'll do is I'll go into the group and just kind of like forcibly overlap them a little bit. Just use my down arrow, select them both and use the pathfinder just to kind of squish 'em up. Um, sometimes that's an easy way as well. I just wanted to let you know that sometimes, ah, just exports.
Let's call it junk. Okay? And you gotta kind of tidy it up a little bit and sometimes it's a bit hacky 'cause the envelope just thoughts weird. But they're cool and useful. Alright? Doesn't have to look like mine.
Hopefully mine doesn't look great. I had visions of it looking really awesome and it looks like that you could do a third whip around. Ah, I'm thinking I can't wait to see what you do. Okay, give it a go. Play around with envelope warp and make a little new badge for your store. It's in your class project files.
