Founder of Bring Your Own Laptop & Chief Instructor

instructor

I discovered the world of design as an art student when I stumbled upon a lab full of green & blue iMac G3’s. My initial curiosity around using the computer to create ‘art’ developed into a full-blown passion, eventually leading me to become a digital designer and founder of Bring Your Own Laptop.

Sharing and teaching are a huge part of who I am. As a certified Adobe instructor, I've had the honor of winning multiple Adobe teaching awards at their annual MAX conference. I see Bring Your Own Laptop as the supportive community I wished for when I was first starting out and intimidated by design. Through teaching, I hope to bring others along for the ride and empower my students to bring their stories, labors of love, and art into the world.
True to my Kiwi roots, I've lived in many places, and currently, I reside in Ireland with my wife and kids.

Everyone in this video I'm gonna show you how  to add a gradient to type. And you're like, why is this a whole video? It's 'cause it's not easy. Trying to copy that kind  of Apple look as well seen this one here, okay, apple did it  for a long time, kind of  through their type on their website. I like it. Kind of half copied it  and illustrator's made it kind of hard.

So lemme show you how to un hardd it. Alright, we just need some text on the page. I've made something that's nice and thick so we can see it. If you wanna cheat and have me type it for you,  open up gradient on text A and with it selected. The weird thing is if I go to fill  and go to gradient, you're like, why is there in a video? It's 'cause this happens.

You're  like, I can't need a gradient. Why not? It's su applied, I can see it,  but type is a weird thing. But we've got some amazing skills  with the appearance panel now, right? We know what that thing does. So that's what we need to do.

So open up the window. Let's go to appearance. Let's click on this. Okay? And there's two parts to type. There's the characters, that's what we're styling over here.

Okay? And then there's the parent, which is called type. So that's the parent characters are the individual parts. At the moment, this is trying to apply a fill  to the characters and it's not working. Watch this. I can dive inside the characters  and apply the fill and it doesn't work.

But if I go back up to type, double click this, okay? I can click on type and say,  you my friend can have its own fill. And you're like, nothing's changed is  because it's got a fill with black in it. If I go fill with uh, white versus uh,  white to black, there you go. That's how you do it. Little trick.

Just open up the appearance panel. Make sure you've got the type  selected, which is the default. Okay? It should be at the top and then apply a fill  to it and switch that. Fill to uh, a gradient. Dunno why that's not the default, but there you go.

Keeps me employed. Uh,  the other thing we can do now is you can go on now  that's, that's probably all you wanted. I'm gonna do that kind of cool apple looking thing. Okay? So you can use your gradient tool and just drag across it. I'm gonna go for that.

Um, actually I'm gonna pick my own color. So I'm gonna go to the swatches. I am going to go here, make sure it's on HSB  'cause that's the one I like. And I'm gonna start with something kind of warmish. And then down here we're gonna go, you are gonna be  that kind of purpley color that they use. Here you go.

Actually, I'm just picking mine colors. Okay? And one thing to know about the gradients is  that it is uh, watch this. If I go down to one line, okay, it'll kind of change. Can you see when I put a return in I type,  can you see the gradient actually changes direction. Okay, so this gradient tool kind  of will stay in the middle of it all.

So if I make, see the gradient there, actually let's do it. Let's do it this way. So if I do a nice line this way, okay,  and I go, okay, I'm gonna make this smaller. Can you see it shrinks up to fit the text. That's just something to note and undo, undo, undo. Alright, that's it.

Uh,  just make sure you use the appearance panel  and use that top level type to apply the fill to. Alright, that's it. I will see you in the next video.
