Founder of Bring Your Own Laptop & Chief Instructor

instructor

I discovered the world of design as an art student when I stumbled upon a lab full of green & blue iMac G3’s. My initial curiosity around using the computer to create ‘art’ developed into a full-blown passion, eventually leading me to become a digital designer and founder of Bring Your Own Laptop.

Sharing and teaching are a huge part of who I am. As a certified Adobe instructor, I've had the honor of winning multiple Adobe teaching awards at their annual MAX conference. I see Bring Your Own Laptop as the supportive community I wished for when I was first starting out and intimidated by design. Through teaching, I hope to bring others along for the ride and empower my students to bring their stories, labors of love, and art into the world.
True to my Kiwi roots, I've lived in many places, and currently, I reside in Ireland with my wife and kids.

Everyone class, project time. We are going to set a task  of finding somebody else's graphic style. Download it from the internet and see if you can get it  going in Illustrator. Um, I want you to use the,  either the text from your small business like mine would be  Grenada Donuts or maybe one of the graphics  that we've drawn earlier in the course. I don't mind if it's text or image, just something  that you've, you know, something unique that you've made. But using somebody else's style,  you can totally change the style.

Now the one thing for this class project is that it's going  to be a little bit frustrating  and I guess on purpose, not on purpose. I don't wanna frustrate you, but I want you to get a sense  of sometimes the graphic styles can be easy to use  and sometimes it can be a little bit of jiggling trying  to overcome them to get them to work. Some styles I haven't been able to make work. There's no definite rule that these have to work. Somebody's made them just like you  uploaded them to the internet. Some of them are better than others.

So the tasks are, download a graphic style, okay? Make it work for your small business, okay? Uh, let us know in the comments when you do post,  like any frustrations that you did have  or like, oh, I didn't realize it took me ages to work out X  or it was this that was giving me the problems. And if you are watching this, go  and look, have a scan through the last kind  of like 10 comments to see what people might have had. And it might help you with your style  or it might just help you educate your future self if you  bump into an issue like that. Um, can you share the link to your style  and where you found it as well?

Okay? Just so that if somebody goes, oh  that is cool, where'd you that from? Okay, it's already there. And linkable and clickable. And then uh, take an image of your style okay? And upload it to the assignments  and share it on social media.

Tag me. I'd love to see what you make. Alright. Happy hunting on the internet. Now I used um, that free pick.com website. I don't use it all the time.

I often use  Invado, but that's a paid service. So just Google, uh, Adobe Illustrator graphic style library  and do some hunting around 'cause these places change. They have all sorts of different rules. There's different styles around,  but there's quite a few of them on there. See what you can find. The one note though is  that if you end up with an EPS file,  sometimes double clicking on it  won't open up an illustrator.

You've gotta go to file open. Be quite deliberate when you open up an EPS file  and then it will open up an illustrator. Sometimes it can open up an acrobat  and all sorts of other weed stuff. It's the only gotcha you might have with the files. But yeah, happy hunting  and hopefully you find a style  that I don't know suits what you're doing. And I dunno, it's quite exciting when I found styles I'm  like, huh, other people's stuff doing the work rather than  maybe following a tutorial  and kind of going through all the steps.

Just got somebody who's done it already. A little bit of fiddling but I  don't know, graphic styles are awesome. Alright, that is it. Happy Homeworking not Homework class project  and I'll see you in the next video  once you've done your homework. No homework.
