Founder of Bring Your Own Laptop & Chief Instructor

instructor

I discovered the world of design as an art student when I stumbled upon a lab full of green & blue iMac G3’s. My initial curiosity around using the computer to create ‘art’ developed into a full-blown passion, eventually leading me to become a digital designer and founder of Bring Your Own Laptop.

Sharing and teaching are a huge part of who I am. As a certified Adobe instructor, I've had the honor of winning multiple Adobe teaching awards at their annual MAX conference. I see Bring Your Own Laptop as the supportive community I wished for when I was first starting out and intimidated by design. Through teaching, I hope to bring others along for the ride and empower my students to bring their stories, labors of love, and art into the world.
True to my Kiwi roots, I've lived in many places, and currently, I reside in Ireland with my wife and kids.

Alright, it's class, project time. This one's called Random Season. Uh, you've been asked to make a background graphic. Okay? Repeating background graphic for social media. There'll be texts and images to go on top of this.

Okay? So what I want you to do is pick a sail season. I don't mind which one it is. Uh,  my one I clearly did winter  'cause it's a wintery hat is what it is. Okay? And uh, so pick any of these ones.

Uh, you can pick one if you like. I just put in a few here for inspiration. I want you to draw a simple object  that embodies that season. We don't wanna use the text vector. We've been leaning on that too much. I want you to draw something quite simple.

Go off and research like uh, autumn icons or winter icons. That's how I kind of found uh, my hat. I was like, I can draw that. It's pretty easy kind of,  I don't know, links in with Christmas  or the winter holiday nicely. The main goal is to randomize it,  but to add a little extra flavor here is I want you  to appropriate colors. I say appropriate.

You can't see my little hands here. I'm going appropriate in the finger quotes  'cause we're stealing colors from someone else. What I did and what I want you to do is go  and have a look through whatever your favorite website  of like cool stuff that you like  to look at in the kind of creative world. Dribble is my one or bee hunts. I go to these two quite often and I was scrolling along. I was like, oh look how cool that is.

Thank you Kaka ka cousin. And, and I took a screenshot of it on my Mac. It's command shift four on pc. It is different depending on which version  of windows you have, but check it out. Okay? Or you can right click it and save it.

Either way, get it into Illustrator  and that's why I pulled my colors. Okay, so let me show you this. So, um, it's a little bonus trick here  because stealing colors from images is slightly weird  'cause you're like, oh, just grab the eyedropper tool. First of all, you need to decide are you doing it  for the fill or the stroke? So bring that to the front. I want the  fill of this rectangle.

Okay? I'm gonna grab the eyedropper tool and watch. Nothing happens, okay? With an image you need to hold down, shift and click it. Dunno why this hold down. Shift on your keyboard using the eyedropper  tool and it will steal it.

If it's not working, you probably have  the, I'm gonna undo that. You have the stroke to the front and you  say yes, there you go. And 'cause my stroke only has one  point, it's very hard to see. Okay, there, that is there. So just make sure that your fills at the front  and that's how I pulled my colors. So there's a little extra level of um, I dunno,  bonus to the class project.

Find somebody else's colors. Okay? And then I want you to do the randomize  and mask basically exactly  what we did in the last video, okay? Um, this thing, okay? Uh, I would turn it into a symbol if I was you. So you can adjust that afterwards.

You don't have to. Okay? But um, yeah, this is where we are looking to get to. So draw it, turn it to a symbol, duplicate it. You could use the repeat grid. I don't mind practice it 'cause it's interesting.

Um, or you can just copy and paste and have loads of them. Select them all and use the object. Transform, transform each. Okay? And once you've kind of got it, I would like you to mask it  so it's not just kind of like flopping all over the place. I wanna trim it into this, uh, rectangle.

I don't mind what kind of rectangle, as long  as it's a rectangle or a square or a circle. I don't mind just crop it. Okay? So we're practicing some of our  tools and yeah, there you go. Uh, I will see,  Uh, make sure when you've done it, make sure you upload it  to the assignment section and share it on social media. I'd love to see what you do.

Um, share the, um, screenshot  as well of the graphic that you took from. Okay. Make sure you credit the person who got it from, okay,  in my case I read them out  and I've included them in the screenshot. I find it's a great way of expanding the colors  that I end up using is by appropriating,  using the finger quotes, other people's stuff. Alright? So go enjoy making random stuff  and I will see your versions online soon.

And then I'll see you in the next video. All right?
