Hi there, I had great fun making this short film for the Distinction Project of the course. Job one was to write the dialogue; I then used an online text-to-speech service to read it. I spent a while choosing the clips (Pixels.com) as wanted them to sync up with the text as much as possible. Once in Premiere Pro, I made proxies, and after cropping and organizing the clips onto the timeline, I colour corrected them (using scopes) - then created an adjustment layer to try and give a stylized look (warm, high saturation and contrast etc). During this I really enjoyed playing with the curves. After that I added my transitions (just playing about with the light leak Dan gave us, and the others on offer inside the program). I slowed down 2 of the clips, and had to use ‘warp stabilizer’ on the shot of the boy in the classroom (as it was jerky hand-held footage). I added my free music and animated graphics at the start and end. No ‘ducking’ was needed as the dialogue runs wall to wall so the levels are constant. Then I used the auto caption creator we were shown. I am happy to follow any suggestions on improving the short. I can’t wait to plunge into the world of editing, as am now feeling much more confident. I’d really like to thank Dan for all the lessons, I think he’s a brilliant teacher. I’d also like to thank Edgar for all his comments and ‘high fives’ throughout. I will take the After Effects course next! Cheers guys. (Let me know if anything is wrong or missing with this vid and I will correct it).

Final Distinction Project – Determination For this project, I chose the emotion determination because it’s something I connect with personally—the idea of facing setbacks, pushing through them, and eventually seeing progress. From the start, I knew I wanted the video to begin with relatable struggle and gradually shift toward motivation and inspiration. I worked in a 16:9, 1920×1080p horizontal format. All video clips, sound effects, and music were sourced from Envato Elements, as I had recently subscribed to access high-quality, licensed assets. To support the emotional progression, I selected a music track that gradually builds in pace and energy. Before editing, I drafted a script that evolved as I chose my footage. I recorded the voiceover myself using an iPhone, which introduced some technical limitations, but after adjusting loudness and clarity in the Essential Sound panel, I achieved a result I was happy enough with given the equipment and the fact I’m no voice actor. Then I added the footage to give a nice visual interpretation of what the script was trying to express, and once the structure was in place, I moved on to colour work. I began with clip-by-clip colour correction, relying on Lumetri scopes and the automatic colour match tool to keep footage consistent. After that, I experimented with an adjustment layer for the overall grade. My final look included basic correction tweaks, a touch of faded film, a small amount of sharpening, an S-curve in RGB curves, and subtle adjustments to shadows, midtones, and highlights. I also added a vignette to tie the visuals together. For transitions, I used a mix of cross dissolves, dip-to-black, and opacity keyframing. I also keyframed exposure on the final shot, alongside some text animation. The slow-motion moment occurs when the boxer is knocked down near the beginning of the video, where I used optical flow to improve smoothness. To finish, I generated a transcript, created captions, and chose to burn them into the final export, as this suited the tone of the video, and added the credits. My export settings were H.264 using an adaptive high-bitrate preset with VBR 2-pass to ensure strong image quality. Exporting became the biggest technical challenge. My laptop’s GPU struggled with the render, so I had to export certain clips individually and re-assemble them in the project. After roughly 15–20 export attempts, I finally achieved a clean, successful render. Although frustrating, it turned into a valuable problem-solving experience.

Founder of Bring Your Own Laptop & Chief Instructor

instructor

I discovered the world of design as an art student when I stumbled upon a lab full of green & blue iMac G3’s. My initial curiosity around using the computer to create ‘art’ developed into a full-blown passion, eventually leading me to become a digital designer and founder of Bring Your Own Laptop.

Sharing and teaching are a huge part of who I am. As a certified Adobe instructor, I've had the honor of winning multiple Adobe teaching awards at their annual MAX conference. I see Bring Your Own Laptop as the supportive community I wished for when I was first starting out and intimidated by design. Through teaching, I hope to bring others along for the ride and empower my students to bring their stories, labors of love, and art into the world.
True to my Kiwi roots, I've lived in many places, and currently, I reside in Ireland with my wife and kids.
