I'm newer to video editing on this scale, and took the essentials course, then dove straight into the advanced course. Still learning and definitely had to go back and re-watch some things throughout to try and achieve a neat and all-encompassing final project. Took a creative route and tried to evoke excitement after dark - in lieu of my city winning the Superbowl this year. As the sun goes down oh Philly, the fans come out to celebrate! The quote from the sports fans in the city is "No one likes us, and we don't care". Philadelphia sports fans have a bad reputation for being obnoxious, but we still love them because they're actually, surprisingly, deep down inside, some of the nicest people you'll ever meet! I tried to get out of my comfort zone and make a reel-styled video at a 9:16 ratio. I used footage from Pexels and music from Envato Elements. I animated a few of the videos to make it interesting as things popped up on the screen to the music. I added spoken audio to the second half of the quote which was almost the most difficult part! I don't have fancy equipment, so my computer mic is sub-par. To achieve an almost no-echo sound I had to run across my room, yell, and come back to stop the voiceover! It was comical, but fixing that sound to be "normal" spoken audio was so hard because the voice over treated it like a sound effect, so I feel I lost some of the editing elements because it wasn't recognized as "dialogue" in Essential Sound. With de-reverb and de-noise effects, I think I was able to make it more normal than what it started as. Color - the video was supposed to look like a day to night transition, I tried to fix a few of the videos to make it more cinematically dramatic. I used a few different scopes and grades to get a "green" look across the board because of the Eagle's team colors, I think it gave it a nice "vibe". I used dip to black on the ends, and cross dissolve transitions in the middle. There are a variety of different speeds in the videos throughout to keep the viewer's attention. And I spent a ton of time animating all the text, specifically the credits at the end, only to realize the last bit of the video Dan shared was "how to roll credits"! So, I went back and tried using that instead, but it probably goes way too fast. Very fun project and a great course - I hope it evokes a smile from people and possibly some fun competitive vibes. Let me know what you think!

Frustration, anger, joy and bewilderment are just some of the emotions that I went through in making this project! This is my distinction certificate entry called Serenity, inspired by the poem The Plains of Peace by Olivia Ward Bush-Banks. The footage, music and incidental sounds come from a paid subscription to Coverr. Text to Speech was again a paid subscription to Elevenlabs. I colour corrected the footage using the Parade (RGB), Waveform (Luma) and Vetorscope YUV. I employed the opacity masking method with the Vectorscope for the white balance and skin tone correction. Using an adjustment layer, I colour matched the footage with a still from the film O Brother, Where Art Thou? as the footage being used has neutral, earthy tones. Another adjustment layer with a Teal and Orange LUT, with the thought that this would give a warming colour grade. Two more adjustment layers using gaussian blur and noise to soften the footage. The transitions between clips are a mix between cross dissolves and light leaks (two black videos layered and offset from each other and using various effects to achieve a light leak effect). Text Animation was a combination of Premiere Pro and After Effects (The first time of using AE) following a tutorial on YouTube. The frustration with animating the text was solely due to the font needed. I eventually went with a font called Hallelujah Brush, and the colour sampled from the footage. Text to Speech used for the dialogue was also frustrating. Trying to give an AI voice emotion is not easy and somewhat costly! A lot of research on how to prompt within the text, a great deal of regenerating the voice and a measure of luck! I then ran the selected dialogue through Lexis Audio Editor, which is a simple and straightforward editor, changing the pitch, tempo, and speed and adding reverb to the clip. I think the tweaking worked! Hopefully the video, gives an impression of inner peace and tranquillity. Although the model may suggest otherwise! Hope you enjoy. Founder of Bring Your Own Laptop & Chief Instructor

instructor

I discovered the world of design as an art student when I stumbled upon a lab full of green & blue iMac G3’s. My initial curiosity around using the computer to create ‘art’ developed into a full-blown passion, eventually leading me to become a digital designer and founder of Bring Your Own Laptop.

Sharing and teaching are a huge part of who I am. As a certified Adobe instructor, I've had the honor of winning multiple Adobe teaching awards at their annual MAX conference. I see Bring Your Own Laptop as the supportive community I wished for when I was first starting out and intimidated by design. Through teaching, I hope to bring others along for the ride and empower my students to bring their stories, labors of love, and art into the world.
True to my Kiwi roots, I've lived in many places, and currently, I reside in Ireland with my wife and kids.
